My Favorite Musical Movies/ Events Of 2021

The year is drawing to a close and with that, looking back. But instead of making a ranked list, I thought I would talk about some of my favorite musical things that happened this year. Many if not all I have full blog posts about, so think of this as a recap of some of the musical highlights of this year for me, and there is a lot to cover, we got a ton of content this year, it was amazing.

The Movies

" Encanto", "In The Heights" and "Tick Tick Boom" had us all singing along this year, and all of them were amazing experiences.  I love each of them, "Tick Tick Boom" being my favorite film I have seen this year, period including musicals and non-musicals alike. The songs from each of these features has filled up my playlists with stealer performances, great melodies and wonderful stories.

I reviewed all of these in posts before, if you want more information on a specific film from this list. But each of these have amazing music, great stories, and look fantastic. I will find myself watching these over and over again alongside other great musical films, whether animated, original or adaptation.

I did not see every musical movie this year but these were fantastic watches from start to finish. Each one full of character, great songs, and music that you will find yourself humming over and over. Mostly for me right now the soundtrack of "Encanto" has been on repeat for a few days now, with no signs of stopping. Each of these is a must watch.

Apple T.V

"Schimgadoon" proved to be my favorite show of the year. It was an easy binge and one of the reasons I got Apple T.V to begin with. Musical series or shows are not that common, and even then some are not good but in this case it was nothing short of amazing. But the first reason I invested in another streaming service was for the " Come From Away" proshot, and it did not disappoint. As someone who does not have access to live theater at the moment and tours are not really reinstated yet this was something that made my day, if not my month when it dropped. This production was not only well produced but well performed and gave me the feeling of sitting in the theater again, both of these pieces of media made me laugh, cry, and sing along making this streaming service worth every penny.

The Tony Awards And Broadway Is Back Concert

Stellar performances and legacy pieces that captured why we love this art form as a whole, and that was just the performances at the Thanksgiving Day parade! All jokes aside the Tony Awards this year was full of new performances, and call backs that filled my heart to the brim with joy to see this art form return after being gone for so long. It made for an unforgettable night full of inspiring speeches to change the future while we have this chance too and should, amazing performances and fun moments. It was a great night.

I did not see every film, or live show, or event or listen to every new album but from what I did these stand out. If I had to pick an absolute favorite then it's "Tick Tick Boom" for the way it inspired me, and still surprised me every time I watch it, it is a near perfect film and is nothing short of fantastic. But everything on this list is worth looking into and checking out, from the opening number at the Tony Awards to "Encanto" on Disney Plus. The fantastic songs and performances that had me smiling ear to ear in "In The Heights" to "Come From Away" giving me something I missed so much with a live performance so good it felt like I was in the same room. Each of these are great and if you want in depth looks at these, I have posts about them on this blog, have a happy new year and see you for more musical content in 2022.

Encanto (No Spoilers)

As a bonus holiday gift, Disney added a movie that you can still see in theaters to Disney Plus for no additional charge. Music by Lin Manuel Miranda fills this animated feature set in Columbia, and as someone who loves Disney musicals, animated musicals, and has been wanted to branch out for this blog. I decided to cover this new release as I am not ready to sit in movie theaters as of recent events, thus why I covered " In The Heights" day one as it was a same day on HBO MAX release but have not covered the new "West Side Story" yet. Since not everyone has not seen this movie in theaters, and it is so new. This will be a non-spoiler review. So, let's see how Disney's newest animated feature fares.

The story is nothing short of amazing, the trailers portraying a magical family who all have their own special gifts... except for one, our lead Mirable. There is an adventure, twists, turns, and ton of very very catchy music. The story is well written, full of comedy, heart, and great emotions. The conflict of this story is more down to earth and relatable then one would expect but it leads to a very beauitful movie with a wonderful message. My one complaint is though the movie have many laughs throughout there were some jokes that did not land at all and few that ran a few times too many but this complaint is minute and many of the jokes did. This is a very feel-good down to earth story that I found relatable, including the awesome songs.

The animation is spectacular and looks amazing, plenty of Disney's latest pictures look amazing and this one is no different. The locations may be in one area but they all look breath taking, the animation used for specific scenes is gorgeous. This movie looks incredible from start to finish and has a great style and atmosphere.

The music is amazing, every song is a winner much like how much I loved Lin's work with "Moana" the music team in this movie knocked it out of the park. The songs range from fun to relatable or both while all being beyond catchy. Like many other Disney songs I will be listening to these songs quiet a bit, and I even talked about one already. It was super nice to finally see the visuals tied to the song. Both work hand in hand with the great narrative to make this movie a great watch.

Since it is no additional cost, I cannot recommend this movie enough, this and "Tick Tick Boom" are two of my favorite musicals we got this year, and I love them both. If you want a fun and new movie to watch this holiday season, this one is a great pick that will have you singing the songs long after the credits roll. I highly recommend this very fun adventure that feels very much at home as well.

Broadway Holiday Ideas!

The Holiday season is upon us, movies, cookies, gifts and more. So, this week I decided to talk about some fun ways to add some musical flare to your holiday season. This will be a list in no particular order on some fun theater-based activities you can do with friends, family, or yourself to make the season bright. No matter what holiday you celebrate here are some musical things I love doing to welcome to winter season.

Watch/ Listen To A Holiday Themed Musical

From "White Christmas" or even something more recent like "Annie Live" or "Christmas Story Live" there are plenty of musicals set around the holidays. There are also plenty of great cast albums to listen to, or shows that have songs relating to the holidays. Whether a song, or a whole album there are plenty of great songs such as " We Need A Little Christmas" from "Mame" to fill a playlist. As well as plenty of classic musicals to watch among all your holiday favorites, or even just a fell good movie musical as well.

Make A Few Holiday Themed Crafts

Perhaps a playbill themed ornament, or a gingerbread house with musical themes. Some musical decorations for the house and the tree to add a little razzle dazzle to the holiday season. Decorating the tree and house with decorations we expect, with a little flare of the stage.

Give Broadway Themed Gifts

From online stores specifically made for musical merch, or on a craft website for shows that don't get a ton of merch. Shirts, posters, cast albums are only scratching the surface of the gifts you can give someone. Musical books for shows like "Hamilton" or "Come From Away" and even DVDs of live proshots, there are so many wonderful musical themed gifts.

Give To A Theater Themed Chairty

Giving is another essential for some this time of year. There are plenty of associations or charities themed for artists to give to. Whether a local theater program or something on a national scale. There are plenty of great organizations to give to, helping artists grow. Many give during this time, and there are many aspects of the arts that need help.

So, there are a few, mostly at home ways to brighten up the holiday season. The future of theater is unknown at the moment, or at least unsure for a little while. There are plenty of live shows and movies to watch, and hopefully things will turn around soon. Until then I will continue to cover what I can and helping brighten your day by enjoying musicals. Even if we have to watch them from home, and listen to albums a while longer, the arts will survive current events. And in the meantime, consider donating to help theaters, whether local or the ones on Broadway. Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Elf The Musical

We are drawing close to the Holiday season, and with all the snow, shopping, and general merriment and there are a few musicals set during this festive time. Some are original and few based on some movies that will be playing on repeat everywhere until January, mid-January in some places. Elf was given a musical adaptation. The tale of Buddy the Elf or so he was told, a child who snuck into Santa's bag who then goes on a quest to find his father. Is this musical adaptation of the holiday comedy a pleasant surprise or something I hope came with a receipt, let's get into the holiday mood all while in song and find out.

As there are not many productions going on around where I reside, let alone productions of this show I will be relying on the Broadway cast album. There is a animated film version with songs from this show but it is much shorter and since I have seen the film plenty of times so I can tell where most of the songs fit in the story.

The plot follows the film just with songs being added so if someone saw this at a civic theater as it has long since closed or made a comeback with a tour that is what you get. If you enjoy the film and would not mind some singing and dancing added. The songs are your usual fare of songs about family, and Christmas cheer which should be sung loud for all the hear. The songs are good, and enjoyable, there are a couple stand outs, but most do feel like you have heard them in other shows.

The subjects, melodies and themes all feel familiar and can be found in other shows. Movie musicals sometimes all sound the same and have that feel good, relatable collections of songs that may have a hidden gem or two but may be hard to stand out. There will be songs about being parents, songs about being a kid, songs about being a family, what you want in life and so on. This show has so many melodies and themes similar to a show I saw live a few years ago. The tracks included reminded me of that show, a movie that was adapted that I watch every year, with some stand out songs which was " A Christmas Story The Musical".

Both shows had a couple songs that I found myself listening to after an initial run through of the show. This show if I saw it live seems it would be like that, fun, enjoyable, and have a couple of fun songs in them. Some of the songs in this show are heartwarming and make great songs to listen to as part of the season "I'll Believe In You", "Sparklejollytwinklejingly" and "The Story Of Buddy The Elf" are some of the stand outs to me. The show has the warm and welcoming feel that captures the season much like the film with songs following suit, most of the time. Some of the songs in this show were either forgettable or just not a good listen for me. I would say half of the album was good, twenty five percent was okay but nothing special, and the final piece were songs I will not be going back to.

Overall, much like "A Christmas Story The Musical" this could make for a fun afternoon if I saw it live, especially during the holidays. It is the film you know with some fun songs included, some that you may find yourself listening to later. Fun and warm melodies that capture the feeling of the season both are a standout and detriment, but overall could make for a fun way to ring in the season. This show is like getting a movie for Christmas that isn't your all-time favorite but one you still watch more than once, a pleasant surprise with enough good in it to warrant at least a listen of the cast album.

Waiting On A Miracle (Encanto)

I was supposed to be talking about Annie Live this week but life had other plans. here is another song discussion in the meantime. Even though I am not comfortable going to a movie theater yet there are a good number of musical films this year from "In The Heights" to the upcoming "West Side Story", but also in the world of animation. Oh yes animated movie musicals count for this blog; they are musicals none the less and some movies such as "La La Land" or "Greatest Showman" have been discussed on this blog without having stage adaptations. And even though I will not be seeing "Encanto" in theaters or "West Side Story", the album for "Encanto" was released so I decided to talk this week about a song that spoke to me.

Many Disney songs are accompanied with a set of songs that fit a mold for every movie they make, a comedic relief song, most times a lovers duet and of course an "I Want" song. Disney animated features have mastered the art of "I Want" songs. From " Part Of Your World" to " How Far I'll Go" classic and modern Disney songs know how to describe the human longing for something greater. This song is a different kind of song in that style in the best way possible. Also slight potential spoilers ahead as I discuss the details of the song so if you wish to see how the song plays out in the movie feel free to come back later!

In this song our performer is heard questioning her place in her family. Summing up what she can't do but says how she has been waiting her opportunity to stand out, longing for a chance to shine like her family does as the lyrics say. She then proceeds to say what she would do if she could, asking where she belongs and if she is too late. This song has not only very relatable lyrics but great instrumentation that starts simple, builds to a grand conclusion and ends on quiet yet powerful note.

The lyrics are relatable to anyone who has wanted to know how they stand out. Perhaps in a family or friend group, wondering what makes you special or how you stand out. Being surrounded by those who seem so much better than us in every way. Asking for a miracle to stand out and belong because that is what it seems that we need. The emotion behind this song is relatable and fantastic. The instrumentation working amazing with the lyric to add even more memorability to this already relatable song.

The lyrics and melodies walk hand in hand, and I cannot wait for more artists to do covers of this song, I enjoy this song so much I cannot wait to see others perform it. That being said Stephanie Beatriz performs this song fantastically and has proven with her role in this and "In The Heights" that she has musical range. I hope she does more musicals in the future; she has a great singing voice and did fantastic in this song. Whether you have seen the film or waiting for its release on Disney Plus, this song is fantastic, and I cannot wait to see how it fits within the plot of the movie and how it is animated. A very relatable song with great lyrics and instrumentation that will leave the listener not waiting to hit repeat.

Sunday (Sunday In The Park With George)

This song is not only about making art, this song is art. The theme of art forming into one perfect moment is displayed in this beauitful song without flaw, and though there are so many options. This is my favorite piece ever made by the late and always great Stephen Sondheim. I listen to many of his amazing pieces of music, and I will always, but if I had to pick one as my absolute favorite, this is the song.

In the midst of chaos and confusion, the artist remembers the core principles. Suddenly the loud outside world fades into a serene paradise, making not just a painting, but a piece of art. The cast sings a beauitful string of words describing the painting they are forming into. Each actor takes their position and as the song builds, staying somber before landing a triumphant ending where the orchestrating and vocals swell into a perfect moment, making the painting that so many know.

Each lyric performed quietly, as the song builds, each lyric building on each other yet keeping the mood constant throughout. The orchestration, beauitful, completing the beautiful descriptions being made as art comes into fruition. The song begins in pure chaos before reaching that moment of when everything lines up and art is made. Everything Geroge has talked and sung about has formed into one perfect moment, as the cast sings in unison to make harmony.

The moment which he has sought for all of act one has built to this moment, where art comes to life . The beauitful lyrics and melody never grow old as this song has such powerful emotion behind it. The song speaks of a park on an ordinary Sunday to quote the song directly and yet it summons such powerful emotion. The beauitful descriptive lyrics and the melody hand in hand create a truly unforgettable song that leaves me speechless every time I hear it.

This song never ceases to inspire me, and show beauty and power in simple moments, the theme of making art and harmony come together in what I can only describe as a perfect song. If you have not listened to this song, please listen to it at least once. The pure emotional power, with beauitful and descriptive lyrics paired with a wonderful melody is nothing short of extraordinary, making this ordinary Sunday, one you will never forget.

Stephen Sondheim

In the recent news of the passing of a legend in the world of the stage, I wanted to share my personal experiences with his work. Stephen Sondheim inspired me on countless occasions through so many shows, whether it was Into the Woods, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday In The Park With George my favorite of his, and so much more. From A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum or West Side Story the lyrics in his shows were always relatable and were so well written at the same time.

His work has inspired me on countless occasions, through so many songs. The lyrics speaking how I felt into music that I never grew tired of. Whether it was songs about making art, or being human. I could list countless lyrics that are so masterfully written that are poetry in motion.

The themes in many of his shows whether the setting was fictitious or grounded in a reality we know spoke so much truth about how we feel, how we dream, or how we relate to those around us. I just recently covered Company for this blog and how it conveyed the American dream and what it means to make it in life and that is just one example of how powerful Sondheim made his shows.

The compositions combined with so many songs such as "Ladies Who Lunch", "Sunday", "Children Will Listen" and so many more are not just classics, they have inspired the current generations and the future of musicals forever more. The characters complex and human, the songs unforgettable in a style all their own, wrapped into stories that took the audience to wonderful places.

Stepehen Sondheim will never be forgotten, and will always live on through his art, and the wonderful stories he gave us.

Tick Tick Boom (Movie Review, Non Spoiler)

Many of us know of the show RENT and the impact it had on Broadway musicals, Jonathan Larson who brought this show to use, was taken far too soon has a story that needs to be told. This film which is Lin Manuel Miranda's directorial debut tells that story. With Andrew Garfield stepping into the role, this is his story about his art, his life, and the people he loved. In some cinemas but available on Netflix, Tick Tick Boom follows Jonathan Larson as he tries to make his art, and navigate in a world where he is running out of time. With Broadway stars and legends both represented and making cameos throughout the film, this is my favorite movie musical this year, and for many years to come.

The performances, songs, and everything about this film is near perfect. I smiled, I sang along, I cried, this film was art. This film portrays art in such a realistic way that I have not felt this way about a musical since Sunday In The Park With George. It captures every emotion it portrays, while portraying real dilemmas and even more so, real people. I felt for moments that I could see the world through Jonathan Larson's eyes, and when a musical guides you through it's narrative that close to the character that it feels as if you are going on their journey, it succeeds. This movie succeeds in spades.

It never shies away from real issues, or to show someone making mistakes, this movie shows real people. It captures the life of an artist who's work changed the game in ways he never got to see. The performances are all amazing, from scene to scene and song to song. Each song fits, nothing is out of place, this is a near perfect film. Every song lands what it seeks to make the viewer feel, everyone memorable and masterfully performed, making this an adaptation worth celebrating for decades to come. The editing masterfully one, blurring the lines between adaptation and documentary, as well as capturing the feel of the time period. Instead of being a dated piece of media, it feels like you are stepping back to a time where a timeless narrative plays out.

This is a must watch for theater fans, every reference and cameo was a delight to find and only added to the enjoyment of the film without being a distraction. Even without knowing this movie is a must watch about art, life, friendship and love. Every beautiful song and excellent performance is a must watch, not only making this one of the best films I have seen this year but in my entire life. Where so many adaptations make their own way, do an okay job, or miss the mark, this one hits bullseye. I can find no flaws with this film, the cast relatable, the story real, the music fantastic, this is an artist's story. And more then just a two hour story, this is the picture into someone's life. All I can say is watch this on Netflix, you will not be disappointed.

Company (Cast Album)

I enjoy many of the works of Stephen Sondheim, my favorite being Sunday In The Park With George, but this is a show I have only heard one song from this show which happens to be "Ladies Who Lunch" an emotional, lyrical masterpiece. With this show returning to the main stage of Broadway soon and is currently in previews I decided to give this show a listen through the album, and potentially add another favorite to my list of favorite Sondheim shows. There are many different adaptations of this show, the one I listened to was the 2018 London cast.

This show follows Bobby who is single, and his many friends who are married, supposedly happily and only want the best for him. As the show goes we get a deeper dive into married life, the standard American dream, and what love means to some people. This is the story I could gather from just listening to the album, and the show seems down to earth but full of Sondheim's wonderful story telling. Any environment can be mundane and house fantastic narratives or raise great questions, and with this show the music grips the listener quickly, with powerful lyrics.

Many of the songs are upbeat and quick paced, which backs up the setting of a busy modern life. Bouncing from dinner to dinner, party to party and trying to navigate it all. Through these light and bouncy tunes there are real questions posed not only about love but what it means to make it in life. And when the show slows down, the show does not come to a halt but rather asks questions that get lost in all the busy shuffling of the American dream. The slower songs are packed with with heart, and will stay with the listeners long after the song ends.

The more upbeat pieces add some levity and fun to show, but also are hiding lyrics with powerful meanings. I did not enjoy every number but the ones I did, kept me hooked. Some I was good with just one listen, and some songs I listened to, again and again.

":Ladies Who Lunch" is a standout, and a complete showstopper, this song is unforgettable. This song plays with expectations in the best way possible, leading to an emotionally devastating finale, all wrapped up in masterful lyrics. The finale of this show is very well done, the conclusions some characters come to, lead to an incredible conclusion, in a simple yet powerful moment.

Even though, Sunday In The Park With George remains my favorite Sondheim show, this one is a great addition, becoming one I will revisit often. This is a show I want to see now, and see how it plays out, in conjuncture with some of these amazing tracks, I want to see how this music ties to the story. A great show that has elements of fun, while asking great questions to walk away with, a show that is definitly worth your company for at least one listen.

With All Of Your Heart (Song Talk)

Today I decided to revisit the show exclusive to Apple T.V that I covered not to long ago. That's right we are going back to Schmigadoon to talk about my favorite song in the entire series, and when there is not one weak track in this collection, it all comes down to opinion. Yes every song in this show is top notch from start to finish, solo, duet, or group number. But today I am picking one that I listen to when I need a boost, a song with a great message that is fantastic that embodies a mix of classic songs with a great modern style. So while I work on some of the bigger projects, and there is a fair amount, it is time for another song talk.

This song is led by the town teacher and her classic, helmed by Ariana DeBose this song is not just a great group number bust also a showstopper. This song is from the fourth episode of the six episode series, each episode having a great level of heart, entertainment, and of course great music both paying homage and parodying the classic era. With great lyrics, a fun dance break, and everything that embodies the classic style in a modern format done fantastically.

Each lyric not only matching the fun and lively instrumentals but holding words of truth in them. A song about the importance of seeing things through, but in fun and light tone, never demeaning. The lyrics all being memorable from start to finish, and when we loop around the background cast fit in perfectly. The school teacher enlists her students to help her, literally spelling out some of the words and emphasizing the song, as well as moral behind it. The song reminds us of seeing things through, which in the context of the story has more then one meaning, showing how well written and placed these songs are.

The message is not only encouraging but holds truth in it, that applies to so many areas. Whether it be art, school, a job or something more personal. The song shows and explains how hard work pays off in a great way, making it a fun lesson to learn or refresh on. The lyrics are inspiring to keep going on something, big or small.

The song is fun and can have a listener listening again and again, enjoying the fun instrumentation, and being inspired by the words. Each lyric fits in and works well with the instrumentation making it a great listen. The dance break doesn't over stay its welcome and leads to a really fun finale. If you are watching it in the context of the show it also leads to a great comedic pay off, but if you are listening it ends on a great note. This song is a showstopper from a series full of them. So give the show a watch and you may also find yourself listening to this song, even after the credits roll.

Be The Hero Of Your Story (Big Fish The Musical)

An opening number is beyond important in captivating the audience, and also setting the stage for the show coming up. And with there being so many great opening numbers, I wanted to talk about one of my favorites. From a show based on a film, following truth versus fiction and the bond of a father and son. The first song of the show and the message it holds even from just reading the title shows you what adventure lies ahead, so today I am going to cover the opening " Be The Hero Of Your Story".

I have listened to this song countless times after discovering it on the radio one day. The song made a strong impression on me, that I listened to it again, and again. This song is one I still listen to this day, and have added to playlists many times, showing my friends as the show is was not the most well known.

The song opens and stays with our leads, at a point in time when the Father of this story is telling his son a tale before bed. The line "Be the hero of your story" leading before we dive into the stories that will unfold. A strong message repeated in this song, and throughout the show about taking control of your own life. A uplifting phrase backed with a powerful meaning that is perfectly performed.

As the song continues and the stories begin to come to life, there is a sense of whimsical joy and fun while still keeping the meaning that was introduced. The song breaks into a dance break with a large group before hitting a giant and grand conclusion. The song keeps the message consistent to the last line, and keeps the inspiration and light tone, never losing sight of it.

The pacing of this song is great, and has all the pieces that make a good opening. A strong line, a good sense of fun, and strong group elements that make the song memorable, the lyrics are fun and memorable and the instrumentation is great. This song is fun from start to finish while being uplifting at the same time.

This song shows that shows that may have not gained a ton of traction may have hidden gems in them. Whether it is an opening, an I Want song, or a finale even. This is proof that every show is worth at least one look because you never know what is waiting when you start, even if it is based on a film. This song is a great listen, and is a great inspiration as well as being a ton of fun at the same time.

Schmigadoon Is Amazing

Not too long ago I review Come From Away with the version released on Apple TV Plus, and little did I know there were a couple of other musical properties on the site as well, such as Central Park which I covered but there was also Schmigadoon, a star studded cast of Broadway and television alumni, coming together to make a six episode musical comedy series. So was this a wonderful visit, or too good to be true, let's dive in.

When Josh and Melissa, a couple who are on a retreat gone sour get lost and cross into the aforementioned town the series is named after, they find themselves trapped in a musical. The town is full of many characters each with a set personality, job, and is content with things staying the same, and Josh and Melissa can not leave until they find themselves falling into true love, and all the towns people may have a secret or two about themselves that they hide under their cherry musical facades. The town is a step back in time back before movies were what they were today, and looks like something from the 1950's or even before, and a song is never too far around the corner either.

This show is not only funny, it is heartfelt with great messages about change, love, and embracing yourself among others but it is so well written, and well done. Each song is well performed, and every scene acted amazingly, every performer does amazing in song or dialogue and there is no weak episode, or dull moment. The characters are real, believable, and many are likeable from the second you meet them. The story is well executed to the point that you feel for the stakes, the romance, and drama. Every character has a place and they fit their roles perfectly, in and out of song.

This show is MADE for musical fans, the parodies, references, and jokes aimed at musicals are all done at a place of love. Jabbing at the classic era and paying homage at the same time, while showing how musicals and society has changed since then. References to Carousel, Sound Of Music, Music Man, and more are abundant from the songs, the characters, and jokes, all paying tribute to that era in such a fun way that never comes across as mean spirited. All of the songs are catchy and great listens and are also great references to the classic era in their styles, catchy, full of heart, and sometimes full of references, such as a song that reminds us of how some classic shows had songs that had no meaning, or songs sung by characters who have little to no impact on the narrative and don't have a ton of screen time. The choreography, big group numbers, solo songs, duets, each one is a home run.

This show is a must for fans of musicals as a whole, doubly so if you love or know classic era musicals and can catch the references. But this is also just worth the watch, it is well written, funny, heartfelt and amazing. The world is warm, bright, and colorful, combined with stellar writing, acting, and music, the jokes land well and are great references to that era of musicals. This series is great, nothing short of it, and I have kept this vague because I do not want to spoil something so amazing and can not recommend it enough. This is a town I plan on visiting, again and again.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (Cast Album)

I may not be able to see this show just yet but the cast album is online so I decided to take a look at two of the shows that were contenders at the Tony Awards this year, one being Moulin Rouge and the other is today's topic. So I sat down and decided to share some initial thoughts on Tina : The Tina Turner Musical. Jukebox musicals based on artists have been springing up more lately, from Cher to Carole King with more announced for the coming future, I have even seen a couple such as " Mama Mia" or "On Your Feet" so let's give this one a look.

Since I do not have the ability to see the show live I will only be covering the album. If I have the ability to see the show or a recording of the show in the future I will then be able to judge how the music fits into the story and how it may or may not work. At this time I can only judge it based on being an album and the music it contains.

This album is great, a great selection of Tina Turner's work ranging from across her career. The album has a great range of upbeat and slow songs, encapsulating her range. And it has been well performed as well, every singer keeps the energy at the right level while performing these songs. I found myself dancing, swaying, and enjoying song after song. There were some that I liked more then others but overall this album is a great collection, "River Deep Mountain High" being one of my favorite for how well performed it is, and also the energy the song conveys.

There are pieces of dialogue peppered throughout the album to help show the mood of each scene, showing aspects of the story. These are not common enough to pick up where intermission happens or the pacing of the narrative but they are present in the album to show those what mood is being conveyed or a sneak peek at some of the story that would be shown live.

The way this album is performed it makes me hope to see how each song fits into the narrative, because I found myself enjoying this album and picking a few favorites even. The cast that recorded this album did fantastic, making a great impression song after song. Each performance carrying the energy of each song that was needed and making this album a great listen, for those familiar with Tina Turner's work and those who are not.

Here are some of the songs that I will find myself listening to again and again, and would recommend.

Don't Turn Around

It's Gonna Work Out Fine

A Fool In Love

Let's Stay Together

River Deep Mountain High

Proud Mary

I Don't Wanna Fight

Disco Inferno

Open Arms

I Can't Stand The Rain

What's Love Got To Do With It

We Don't Need Another Hero

(Simply) The Best

This album is great for people who love jukebox musicals, but also someone who want a great showcase of an artist's work. This album has so many great picks that are wonderfully performed and stand tall, full of life and emotion. This album is a great listen and if I can whether on tour or in a community theater someday would love to see how these great songs fit into the narrative.

Don't Rain On My Parade

This song is not just a showstopper, it is anthem that embodies giving your all no matter what the world around you has to say about you. This song is a classic, and It has been a little bit since I talked about a song, so here we are. From the hit show Funny Girl which is due for a revival in the near future at the time of this post, now seems like a great time to dive into why this song is so iconic.

I have not seen the show in any capacity or the movie it is tied to, I have only listened to this song countless times. This song speaks to me on many levels, it is a mood booster and an encouragement for several reasons. From relatable and uplifting lyrics, a kinetic and unmoving energy with memorable lyrics and score, and reasons I could list all day, this song is a must listen

Each lyric has an air of pure confidence but not that of arrogance. This song stands up and says " Do or die, this is my time" from start to finish. This song has so much soul from the catchy lyrics, perfect pacing, and masterful instrumentation. This song is vibrant and full of life from beginning to end. The song has a instills an encouraging spirit showing that no matter what happens, you have to try to chase your dreams and let no one stop you.

The use of comparison is perfect saying " Whether I am the rose of sheer perfection or a wrinkle on the nose of life's complexation.." shows what is at stake, and makes you root for the performer. The one performing the song shows what could be which is true to life and art, a huge success or a giant flop, but she wants to at least try. Saying "Do not send a cloud to rain on my parade.." shows that no matter what, or who gives or does not give support they are trying. This song is like giving yourself a pep talk, believing in yourself till the finish no matter what.

This song is not only incredibly catchy, warranting multiple repeats but it also embodies what we all should do a little more, believe in ourselves. Too many times we let others opinions weigh us down and matter in places they maybe shouldn't be. This song is a reminder to live your life to the fullest and keep striving, a great message for a great song.

This song is multiple decades old but has a relevant message while still being a fantastic song, making it timeless. The song can be used to pick yourself up, get you excited before your work day, or just something to dance to, this song is fantastic and will continue to entertain and inspire for ages to come.

The 74th Annual Tony Awards And The Broadway Is Back Concert 9.26.21

Before I make this post and dive into this mostly fun event, I will not mention or bring mention to the show Jagged Little Pill until changes are made. I stand by those effected and I am hoping for a day where they can perform safety and without threat of harassment. There are more sources with better information on this story.

It has been a long time coming but the Tony Awards have finally arrived, this time split into two shows with two amazing hosts, Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr. each housing fantastic performances. Each show was handled with care and mandates were upheld for the safety of the patrons and those performing. And with the limited amount of shows to pick from, this was a very different year for the Tony's. There were returning casts from shows past performing old favorites, so tonight not only awarded the current season of plays and musicals, but also celebrated with some of the best. Tonight harled Broadway's triumphant return with plenty of old favorites such as " You Can't Stop The Beat" from Hairspray, " What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line, " For Good" from Wicked and so much more.

Both of the hosts did amazing, bringing great performances as well as a ton of fun to tonight. Which was very much needed. This night celebrated theater as a whole and Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr. did simply amazing, either or both of them can be counted on the host future tony awards. There was not a joke that dragged on or a moment that led to an awkward pause, but rather both them kept the energy flowing, had plenty of fun moments, and hosted fantastically, both also performed amazingly, every time they performed.

Almost every performance (barring one I will not discuss) was amazing. Every past song performed by former castmates or past tony winners brought tears to my eyes, all but one of them bringing a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. And Tina and Moulin Rouge did amazing, the former being energetic and powerful, the later being energetic and just plain fun. The songs that brought back cast members brought tears to my eyes and reminded me why I love these songs and these shows, whether it was from a cast member or a person from the musical community.

The speech's challenging the viewers and the industry itself with such honesty, grace, and passion. The performance and speech from the Broadway Advocacy Association had me cheering, and on the edge of my seat, it was purely powerful. There were many amazing speeches, calling for a better and brighter future for ALL and every one hit the nail on the head. Not just calling for change from the audience but rather the industry itself. There are many steps needed to go forward, and this is a place where those steps need to be taken, and already should have been.

I enjoyed most of the night, besides one performance I loved all the others, I had an enjoyable night. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I rocked out to some of my favorite songs, I was moved by others, I was challenged by some of the speeches, I was moved. I missed theater and the joy that it brings only in the way it can. I will be giving an update soon on what content is to come on this blog, but this gave me hope and made me excited to one day, safety sit in a theater and enjoy my favorite art form. Broadway may not be back for all of us yet, but it is back in a capacity and slowly coming back, and I am more then ready for it.

Newsies (Broadway Cast)

If you own Disney Plus, there a good number of musicals whether it is a film, an animated movie, or a couple of their live taped musicals. Of course there is Hamilton but I want to talk about one that has been on there long before that production. Originally on Netflix, available for purchase for those who want to own it, I am talking about The Newsies Broadway Experience. Originally aired in movie theaters this reunion of the original Broadway cast of Disney's Newsies is a fun, heartwarming, and uplifting production that is a must for musical fans.

Based mostly on the film from the 90's this follow a group of Newsies, their hopes, their lives, and how they must take on their employer. Going on strike and trying to get their voices heard, their fight is not an easy one. But what is easy is for the audience to love this soundtrack. From sweeping group numbers that are full of energy and life, to solo songs that are full of character and can not be forgotten. From score to song, this soundtrack is perfection. Every song serving a purpose, moving the plot along, developing characters all while being relatable and catchy. The group numbers are this shows strong suit and there is not a weak one in the bunch. They are can range from fun and light hearted to epic ballads accompanied by top notch instrumentation.

This taped production is well shot capturing the scope and scale of seeing it live. As someone who saw it live this is a perfect adaption, while some shots in other productions hop around or do not savor a moment this is different, this is filmed so well it feels as if you sitting in the theater watching it live. Each returning acting shines, and brings a cast album many have listened to life, well acted in song and during dialogue. Conveying emotion from start to finish, bringing the characters to life and adding gravity to the challenges they face. Each song is masterfully performed with the same emotion, making the transitions seamless and the show a wonderful tale the audience watch unfold.

There are some storylines in this show I do not care for, and they seem to take away from the more gripping ones. There are also a song or two that are give or take situations, they can add to the show, but if they were removed, nothing of value would be lost. These faults are few and far between, and the good outshines the bad in spades. For every piece of dialogue that leads nowhere or joke that doesn't land, there is a scene full of heart and charm that really stays with the viewer.

This is a must for any musical fan who has Disney Plus alongside the great production of Hamilton this show deserves love as well. A inspirational tale of overcoming obstacles with songs that inspire those long after the curtain falls. With a ton of heart and charm, this story is one that is worth your time and is worth being a front page story. Seize the day and treat yourself, you may find yourself inspired as well.

Come From Away

On September 10th 2021 a proshot of Come From Away landed on Apple TV, and I like many were excited to see this show come to life where I had only listened to the album before. I have listened to the album on repeat for a couple years now. So with all the crazy events going on and a still shaky future for live theater, seeing a show that I have wanted to see brought me plenty of joy from start to finish.

This show is once again tried and true proof that proshots should become a norm when it comes to musicals. Making shows that are still fresh and new, that may have tours but may not come to every area. Giving greater access to those who would not have seen the show otherwise. This is one of the best shows I have seen and only gives me a deep want to see it live when the opportunity best presents itself.

This tale follows true events of what happened during the September 11 attacks back in 2001, following the people who were diverted to Canada from around the world, and those who welcomed them with open arms. This show follows true stories, full of heart, humor, but never too afraid to sugar coat or dance around details. This show tells the whole story, happy moments and sad ones, incredibly well told. The story tells the full story perfectly, and captures every emotion it wants to convey perfectly to make a truly unforgettable experience. This can also be leant to amazing performance by the case show, each member giving their all to bring this story to life, and they did, they really did.

The music full of life, and with amazing instrumentation. Each song conveying emotion, hand in hand with the dialogue and brings this story to life. Taking you back to this day and showing many different angels. Each song has a place and whether somber or upbeat, is memorable. No song is out of place, and each one is performed incredibly well. Each song is amazing and if you can, the album is worth at least one listen. This show gives not only humor, heart, and truth but also inspiration and encouragement. Showing kindness on one of the darkest days, from people who did not even share a country. On the foundation of " You would have done the same", showing a strong connection, and how we all pray, feel fear, and push through life together. The show shows how humanity shined, a flicker on that terrible day, and made a lasting impression. Inspiring the audience to do the same, and brighten uip the world, even in the smallest of ways.

This is worth a watch, if you want to laugh, cry, think, and be encouraged all at once. This show is a must, with great music, great acting, and a well shot production to be kept and shown to many. It is worth watching on the streaming service it is on, and I am hopeful for a DVD or digital purchase release. This production is a must see, showing us that even on a island in between there and here, we can all find hope and humanity, even in a place we would never expect. Even if it were just once, this is a must watch and listen.

Me And The Sky: A Song And A Story (Come From Away)

As I prepare for the release of Come From Away on Apple TV I decided to go through on of my favorite songs in not just this show but in musicals period. As I wait to see how it plays out I decided to go through the song Me And The Sky, and discuss why this song not only makes for great music but also a great story. Not only giving information to the audience, but giving a narrative that hooks them while being a good song is no easy feat, let's see how this tune fares.

This song follows the story of  pilot Beverly Bass from the moment she yearned to fly, to the obstacles she has overcome, how she conquered them, and what she is facing now. She gives us a tour of this story, making it not only relatable but also very personal. The tune begins with a wonderful acoustic guitar to lead us gently into the song, as the song goes more singers and instruments are added growing to highlight how far our narrator has come.

Beverly begins where it all started and gives us a song and a story in one which this show does masterfully in spades. She guides us into the chorus which uses the word suddenly, but not for the sake of repetition but rather holding a different meaning, showing how quickly your dreams can be realized, even if they start in a less then desirable passion you can still enjoy parts, and if you keep at it and keep chasing them. The instrumentation grows and we hear the powerful lyrics " Suddenly there's nothing in between me and the sky" both in a figurative and literal sense in this case.

We get to the next part of her career and even though she is in the air, Beverly is being blocked in one form or another. The story shows how at some points she is standing alone where none of her coworkers had her back, thinking she didn't belong as a pilot. But as the song heads back to the chorus we see she kept at it and became the first female American captain in history, and once again she shot for the sky and made it. Keeping her eyes on her dreams she preserves and mentions how over time things turned around, giving great inspiration.

But this is where the song takes all expectations and throws them out the window, what could have been a light, fun, inspiration added the truth and brings us back to the reality of the situations those on September 11th face even to a pilot. She describes family life and how suddenly she is married and a mother. Everything seems perfect but then the suddenly is used for something different, how she must land, how " something I loved more then anything was used as the bomb", and how something was between her and the sky. The song ends with less instrumentation and on a more somber note but a powerful one.

This song tells a full story, with ups and downs and thus tells a real one. Masterfully written and performed by the Jenn Colella and the original Broadway cast with great instrumentation, this song will give you everything. Inspiration, feeling, reality, a relatable story of overcoming and facing challenge all wrapped with very real and raw emotions. This song tells a full story and does not shy away from using the good and the bad, a beautiful piece that has shares the truth through a wonderful true story. This song is a must listen, and I can not recommend it enough.

Reprises Are Awesome

Sometimes a song is so great we have to hear it again, but not at full length but rather a shorter version, a nice reminder of something we heard before but in a new light. And that is why reprises are amazing! Hearing familiar melodies to either show how a character has grown or remind the audience of their goal. Sometimes they are sung by the same character and sometimes different but they can be an important part of a musical none the less. First off for those who write the shows it allows them to use material that they have already created without writing a new song. It can reiterate themes and ideas without having to be completely new. It can reuse a melody that the audience could have thoroughly enjoyed before and remind them of the song from earlier thus tying everything together both in theme and in song.

From the audience point of view, a reprise can be a short little song in a scene where there would have been none. A brief break from the dialogue but a break none the less. It can advance plot and remind the audience that there are more songs to come. It can be used to close a scene without having to speak it out in dialogue and make a transition even more seamless. A song can be a nice way to wrap a scene up with a boy instead of just telling the audience, why tell when you can sing!

They can call back to something from the previous act to really iterate a characters personality, ideals, or goals, all while not taking up too much time. Some of the best reprises can be worth a listen even when they are less then two minutes long. Whether a comedy uses it to hammer in a joke in a cleaver way or another show used it to remind you why the cast is where they are. It can be used an update without just outright saying it but making it fun and memorable.

Another form is reusing the melody, ideas, and even lyrics but being a mostly different song. Something in act two that feels and sounds like something from act one but does not share the name. Many finales also often turn into reprises to use a song we loved to wrap up the show. Some shows turn the ending into a medley and we get a bunch of mini reprises bundled together as a send off for the show that we have been spending the evening with.

Reprises are necessary because they have so many amazing uses. Some musicals do go without but plenty use them and we love these songs so much we love to see them again, even an act later and in a different way. In one form or another sometimes songs are so great they often deserve another look.

Don't Want To Be Here (Ordinary Days)

It is time to go through another song, that I love from a show that is not talked about often. Ordinary Days follows a few different stories of peoples lives in New York City and this song is another shining example of that. This I want or should I say, I don't want song is a great character introduction but has a great balance of comedy, character, and pushes her narrative in a great way.

The piano melody greets the listener and stays throughout, simple, down to earth, yet super memorable. It gives the lead room to really steal the show, as the background music and lyrics really work together to tell a story. This song walks through one of our leads lives, from starting life in a cul-de-sac to graduating college. As she narrates her life story thus far you see her true motive which is not wanting to settle in one place and keep discovering herself. From going to grad school and constantly moving while doing all sorts of different jobs. The motivation adds not only a ton of character but relatable wanting to leave home and try to go on to bigger and better things.

Not to long I discussed I Want songs and this one fits into this song as well, as it not only describes her environment but her constant feelings for it. From how she feels about school to the work place and how she has moved constantly due to not wanting to be there any more. As she faces obstacles such as not her ideal job being the only place hiring or not having the courses needed to not being able to settle on a major.

She tells the audience that she is not negative but rather there are bigger and better things that never seem to be where she is. That she always moves because her mind is always moving and that she doesn't want to stick with one job and embrace the mundane. The song ends with her telling the audience where she currently is and how she doesn't want to be there either. This song has a strong theme all the way through that conveys a relatable theme while being wrapped in a memorable song. It captures why we love I Want songs with a bit of a comedic edge that works to its advantage. This song tells a story fitting into a good length that it does not drag on, it repeats phrases and ideas but does it well. It adds new information while repeating old information in a great way.

If you want a great I want song, this one is a must to be added to the list, this show has some hidden gems and some great songs. Sometimes shows that only you know of can hold some of your favorite songs, and shows that might be forgotten have elements worth remembering.

Paulette, King George, And The Art Of Good Comic Relief

We all need a laugh sometimes, and a good musical will give you one, whether the base show is a comedy and everyone is cracking jokes, or is more serious and the role is given to just one character. Comic relief can help break the tension but also when done well add a change of pace without being a distraction. At their worst they can derail the story, distract, or make the audience lose interest. But we are going to save the worst for another day, today I want to talk about when a musical does comic relief right as well as given an example or two. The kind that leave you laughing long after their scene ends, that leave a lasting impression or could even be your favorite part of the show. But first let's dive a little deeper into what makes good comic relief.

Good comic relief is the kind that a character could have even just one scene and steal the show. They are not overacting or trying too hard, they are just in their element, they could even be unaware what they are doing could be considered funny. They could just be living their day to day life and deliver a line that hits with the audience but to them is not out of character and makes sense to them. They will either do something that seems crazy to us, or say something super witty, but to them it will be just how they view the world, it adds to the show instead of take away from it. It gives you a moment to laugh and breath when things are tense, or if the show is comedic it keeps the energy up and the mood light. Comedy can shift the mood when needed or keep the mood where it needs to be when done right.

My first example is Paulette from Legally Blonde. The show is full of comedic characters, and everyone has a great line or a funny moment. So how does she stand out besides getting added stage time and being a crucial piece to the plot. She adds to the leads journey and the lead adds to hers making it a great friendship. A great comedic relief is one with purpose, Paulette has her own problems, her own storyline, and her own dreams that play out alongside Elle's. She helps progress the plot, has her own story line that does not subtract and adds to some of the themes of the show. Yes she is a just a character whos storyline was already shown in the movie this is based on, but the musical expands her character so much more. She gets a lot more screen time, and some songs that are also super funny besides moving the plot along.

Another necessary part of comedic relief is that they are more then just jokes. Some can be only comedic and work, but the more stage time they get, the more they need to show why there are there. Sometimes the plot can be overshadowed in favor of jokes, so a good character moves the story along while making you laugh. It can cause the audience to remember the story and the moment, while not just spilling exposition.

My other example for today is King George III from Hamilton. Though he is not on stage at all times, he leaves in impact when he does. He is used to not only have a light and fun way of showing the English side of the revolution but to prepare for the next big story beats. He conveys information all while putting his opinion and spin on the plot so far. When he arrives he makes the scene his own, and his songs are always in character. He may be dispensing information crucial to the plot, even as an outsider, or how it affects him. Never breaking character he shares his thoughts even after his involvement in the plot has shifted away from the conflict of act one. He reappears even after his time with the plot is done to remind the audience he is still there, and wants them to know it, which leaves a great impact. His songs are not only incredibly well made, but also reflect his style, never changing so even though the musical style is the same his thoughts change. Using a layer of familiarity before delivering a great punchline.

That is another great sign of a great comedic character, when they have balance of the familiar and the surprise. They can lull the audience into thinking they know where the punchline is going only to go in the opposite direction for a great comedic pay off. Whether in song or in the dialogue, comedic relief is essential, whether to move the plot along while making us laugh, or giving us a much needed break from the action, when done well they can stay with you long after the curtain call.

September Announcement! StreamTember!

This September I will be covering all sorts of musicals but there is one rule, they have to be on a streaming service, whether it is on Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, or a series on Apple TV. The Tony Awards are digital only and I wanted to cover all sorts of digital musicals whether they be a stage adaptation, a film, or a concert. There is even a streaming service just for Broadway musicals that I could look into or even later on for fun. But that is going to be the theme so that is something to look forward, there will still be song deep dives, because even if the album is on Spotify that is technically a streaming service for music. Now back to our regularly scheduled content, thank you for reading, and have a fantastic day.

Waiting For Life (Once On This Island)

It is time to dive into another song, this one from Once On This Island with a wonderful song called Waiting For Life. This song is not only a great listen, but a great example of an "I Want" song in a show. For those who do not know an "I Want" song is usually used by the main character to share their hopes, dreams, feelings, and goals to the audience. Usually wanting to be away from their current environment and dreaming of something bigger, a song that can not only encapsulate wanting something more but can relate to the audience. So with all of that out of the way, let's dance through this wonderful song.

The song begins with dreaming of something bigger, and how the feeling is felt even by nature itself wanting more saying " Even the fish in the sea are wishing to fly". The dreaming lead uses the nature around her as her example in a fantastic, before turning her desires into a prayer, asking for something big. Asking for so much more, before returning to the reality she is in which is not what she desires.

She proceeds to examine her environment talking about her mother and people who live by, and how they have settled into life looking this way. She proceeds to describe a mystery stranger who has yet to appear but when he does he will able to take her on the adventure she seeks. An expert use of setting the scene and describing how the character is feeling in a couple lines, continuing the sentiment from earlier.

The song slows, and becomes a sentimental slower melody as it returns to a prayer, going deeper into her desires asking to be remembered saying " Don't single me out and then forget me". The melody then picks up and swells as it draws to its closing, where she demands to be shown why she is alive, asking to fly and reach places where no one has been. Saying " You tell me to wait, well I am waiting, Waiting for life to begin". Encapsulating the feel of this song and drawing it to a perfect close. Setting the scene and setting up for the plot to take place, a perfect " I Want" song.

The ensemble is used so well as well, providing background vocals perfectly setting a cozy yet upbeat song that feels so welcoming. The lead is taking the stage but the rest of the cast provides great background singing to bring the whole piece together. A song that wants and longs for more, the melody of this song is perfect. It changes pace so naturally, and slows down to create an unforgettable moment before picking up and wrapping up the song. The instrumentation is fantastic, with all the pieces together making an unforgettable song, a must listen from a great revival of a show.

The Music Man

This is a cast album that I have revisited a couple times a year since about 2012 when I discovered it, one of the first classic, golden age musicals that kept my attention, the songs were fun, enjoyable and full of charm. Not every song was my favorite but the some of them really stood out to me. It has been some time since I have given this show a listen, so today I am looking at the original Broadway production helmed by Robert Preston and Barbara Cook as the two leads in this comedic romp set in a small town in the Midwest. With a revival still potentially on the way I wanted to look at this one, so let's dive in.

This plot entails a con artist by the name of Harold Hill as he tries to trick a small town into starting a marching band, when he gets the money, he teaches barely any music and runs off with the profits. He falls in love with Marian, the local librarian who is aware of his plans from day one. Some of the subject matter, views, and songs of this show are a tad dated. Some parts age like a fine wine and others not so much, some are a double edged sword. Such as having a female lead be the smartest in town but dedicate both of her solo songs to falling in love. This show is classic in both style and sound, there is quite a bit of good in this show but I wanted to address that first.

Some of the songs are lyrical masterpieces, " Ya Got Trouble" and " Seventy Six Trombones" to name a few. The songs can weave jokes, charm, and character all encapsulated in a catchy tune. Though some of the song themes in this show repeat a tad too much. Namely the barbershop quartets, first used a joke, the joke wears thin about the fourth time it is done. Some of the songs are great listens and are fun, but I find myself skipping a decent amount as well. There is plenty of fun to be had, but some of the songs feel unnecessary and aimless for the plot. Some of the songs featuring the town add some character to the town but there is a slight balance problem. The show needed a bit more focus on a couple side characters as well as our female lead.

There are a few different versions of this show, some versions even carrying cast members over from Broadway, but I stuck with the original cast album. Plenty of the songs are bouncy, fun, and enjoyable, some of the jokes just wear thin a little bit. The ensemble is great but sometimes they get a bit too much screen time. The show has a few balancing issues but still has plenty of good in it, and with some minor edits would be amazing. If My Fair Lady can get a few changes why not make this classic from good to great. Here are the songs I find myself listening to from this show. The ensemble sometimes is used fantastically while other times used in ways that don't advance the story, make that many jokes, or really fit in, but I found myself liking more then half the album.

Rock Island

Ya Got Trouble

Piano Lessons

Goodnight My Someone

Seventy Six Trombones

Sincere

Pick A Little Talk A Little

Marian The Librarian (My Favorite Song)

Will I Tell Him/ Lida Rose

Finale

This show is a classic and should be celebrated, but flaws aside still has some amazing music in it. When the songs hit the lyrics and melody just right the songs are unforgettable. The songs when done right can be full of character, charm, and even humor. Not every joke lands but they sometimes shine through. This show is wonderful time capsule and piece of the classic era. Give it a listen, you may find some favorites.

Final Rating: Chip On My Shoulder (7-8 Out Of Ten)

Putting It Together

I enjoyed talking about Chip On My Shoulder so much that song discussions are going to be more common, so today I wanted to dive in and cover a song that has many versions. Putting It Together from Act Two of Sunday In The Park With George, a powerful show about love, art, and creativity. This song inspires me that I find myself listening to the many different versions of this show and each one has a way to set it out while keeping the fundamentals the same. Whether it is the song from the show or a cover, this song is about making art at it's core and I will be covering that today. The version I am focusing on is the version from the revival in recent memory which I highly recommend.

This song greets the audience in act two as we jump ahead in time, to a different George but who is still an artist. He is at an art event showing off his latest piece. The number begins with the thoughts of those attending on the piece as well as the arts itself as a subject. Mirroring both truth and opinion yet still coming back to the same sentiment which is " Art isn't easy". As George makes his appearance, played by the same actor as George from Act One but is a different person with which the show explains the reason for later, everyone greets him. He takes over and talks about the art from his perspective, echoing the phrase from before. George explains the tricky balancing act of making what one wants to make, dealing with others thoughts and opinions, making money, and navigating everything all at once.

" The art of making art, is putting it together" escapes George's lips and the song comes together to show all the behind the scenes behind every piece we see in a museum. From critics opinions, to how to navigate and make connections to socializing. From wants and desires balanced with what is needed to progress and advance in this world. Dealing with trends, the changing art climate and much more. The song from this point until the end is George navigating and rolling with the punches as he tries his best to navigate the environment, make connections and more. George will pause to share his thoughts and feelings often with the audience, the song ending with him putting everything together, every piece both social and as an artist.

This song may be about art in a museum but still speaks true to creatives everywhere, the message f wanting to make art while balancing others opinions both professional or from friends and families rings true for many art forms. And that is where the covers come in, some of them cover making art in the music industry and balancing those trends and feelings, echoing the same message at its core even if the wording is different. This song proves to be a great inspiration showing that art is not always glamorous and takes a lot of work, but having someone else say it echoes a familiar feeling and makes the song relatable. Whether it be writing, painting, music or another form of art the message and feeling of this song rings true.

There are so many versions of this song, and I highly recommend the 2017 version from the revival but there are also a ton of well made covers of this song by popular musicians. This song reminds us every great piece of art faces criticism, it faces challenges and that making art requires putting it together. By showing the behind the scenes this song shows the cast on the same level as the audiences a fellow creative that the listener could see through their eyes, being a fictional situation grounded in reality, truly making this song a great piece of art. Bit by bit and piece by piece, from the amazing melody and performances, to the fantastic and relatable lyrics this song is definitely worth a listen.

Act One Closers

The curtains rise again, an intermission starts, and the audience chats with each other about the show thus far. In the moments before that breather is important in terms of both narrative and song. The song right before intermission, the act one closer is one of the most important songs in the entire show. So today I wanted to talk about the importance of an Act One closing song and share some of my favorites. This song is some cases a finale, the final to the first act. It leaves you wondering what will come next as well as where the characters will go from there. Perhaps a change in the narrative, an approach of the boiling point of conflict, or a characters reflection. In terms of story it could change the tone of a show or change the mood, taking a moment to breath right before intermission, or going all in to keep the narrative momentum. They can leave the crowd on the edge of their seats or cheering for more. These songs are just as  important as an opening, or finale, meant to hammer in a message of the show or give a moment to reflect. They can move you and the narrative along, or stop things to question events that just occurred. They can wrap up plot lines while introducing new ones, or thicken the plot at hand. So with that being said I wanted to share some of my favorite Act one closing songs and why.

Santa Fe (Newsies)

A powerful end to act one, full of emotion, this song is an emotional valley of the story, beautifully expressed in this unforgettable song.

One Day More (Les Miserables)

The summation of everything in the show thus far in one epic moment that is equally emotional, powerful, and awe inspiring, leaving the audience wanting more.

Defying Gravity (Wicked)

A turning point in the plot that the story has been building too, nothing is the same after this number which is incredibly powerful and an emotional victory as the plot progresses.

You're Nothing Without Me (City Of Angels)

A fun back and fourth, with great big band feel that sums up the feeling of the show incredibly well.

Nonstop (Hamilton)

A song of pure energy, everything in the show has been pushing to this number and the epic conclusion of act one is not only a brilliant set up for act two, but a powerful examination of the cast and how they feel, their dreams, how their lives are change, and how some strive forward.

Bad Idea (Waitress)

Much like Wicked this is a big turning point, and a powerful moment for two characters, with this turn that can not e reversed, leaving the audience wondering where the story will go next while giving an incredible song.

So Much Better (Legally Blonde The Musical)

An emotion victory for the lead we have been following and cheering for, in an incredibly catchy, super satisfying conclusion to acts one story, making you wonder how far she can go and cheering with and for her.

Sunday (Sunday In The Park With George)

Beautiful, calm, and packed with emotion, simply beautiful.

All of the songs listed are amazing, and must listens, but this is just scratching the tip of the iceberg. What are some of your favorite Act One finales? Let me know, and thank you for reading.

Chip On My Shoulder (Legally Blonde The Musical) Musical Motivation

This song has so much character in it, that I have decided to listen to it over and over to discuss it with you. I would have done it anyway because this song is amazing but that is besides the fact. Clocking in at eight minutes and fifty seconds there is a lot of ground to cover so let's get started.

The song opens with Elle defeated when she comes across Emmitt who we have met before in the show but have never heard his story. When asked he tells Elle why he has managed school and two jobs and why. Not only coming from a rough background but also why he was able to get so far, he gets to the chorus and explains the chip on his shoulder. Now when someone first hears that phrase they think someone with something against the world, but Emmitt is different, he uses it as motivation. Using Elle's comment to confirm he is driven and wanting to excel to be the best of the best. He proclaims how he will not waste his chance and so close that he will keep pushing forward.

As the song continues you find out why he does not attend social outings or waste his time chasing popularity like some other characters. He would rather work hard and buy his single mom a big house, then returning to the chorus saying how he told his mom the same and how he will keep striving. This is a great way to not only show a strong and motivated character but one the audience will root for. He is helping Elle who is hitting her all time low, and sharing why. This automatically sets Emmitt apart as his own character in the span of minutes and makes him someone you want to get to know more and watch his story play out.

The song continues as the pair teams up, mixing humor with a montage of Elle getting more in tune with the subject material of school, time passage being represented by different holidays being song by the Delta Nus. Elle is still infatuated with her ex but is getting help from Emmitt and trying, until we get to amazing moment about six minutes into this song. Elle realizes not only her potential but embraces, proclaiming she has a chip on her shoulder and is done fawning over her ex boyfriend but wants to face the world head on. The song concludes with Elle not only showing in class how far she has come that everyone is impressed but so is Emmitt. He ends the song celebrating how far she has come with bigger goals in sight, he is so happy to have helped someone and shows how he is genuinely a good character, helping someone just because it is the right thing to do and because he has been there. This song adds so much for both of their characters, not only showing and establishing one but showing them grow.

The message of keeping motivated and growing is throughout this whole song and not only propels the cast forward but inspires the audience. By showing a character grow and the whole process it shows that progress does not come over night but inspires the audience to keep motivated in pursuit of their dreams. The song shows that you might find a new you and it is better then whatever those around of you say you are, Elle had been this way because so many put her in a box and she allowed herself to be. When she steps out of it she soars and shows she can stand on her own whether with her ex or not. The moment she gets a chip on her shoulder is a great emotional pay of and shifts the story in a way that adverts expectation, she gives up chasing the boy and shows she can stand on her own. The music and instrumentation in combination of the lyrics makes the song incredibly memorable. The lyrics are inspiring and so good, whether it's Emmitt's backstory or Elle stepping forward, the song is fun and inspiring, with so much character and heart, not only moving the plot along but inspiring the audience to keep motivated as well in such an unforgettable way.

Over the course of this incredibly catching song not only are the characters motivated which then motivates the audience while using a very memorable song. But a character who has been losing constantly gets one of her first major wins and it is an awesome moment. This song introduces a character and establishes him as someone who the audience can root for and identify with as well as getting Elle farther then she has been in the plot so far. The song shows the bond of two characters begin so it can expand and grow later in the show, and has a powerful message. This song is not only fun and inspiring but it is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it.

Waiting For The Stages Return

We are about two months away from the lights opening back up on Broadway, the Tony Awards, and more. Though the future of the stage has some peaks and valleys to get through as we all get into a period of readjustment there is plenty to be excited about. For many like me, there will be new albums, new musical movies, and even a live show or two to pass the time. I will be waiting till early 2022 for tours to resume and I am so excited to be back in the theater again in a safe manner that upholds precautions against COIVD 19 as well as other seasonal sicknesses. But there is still some down time so while we wait for the curtains to rise, here are a few suggestions on how to pass the time, some of these I have said before but some ideas are new, this is more of a reminder while I work on some fun content for this blog.

Civic Online And Outdoor Theater

Plenty of civic theaters are doing outdoor shows, not only is it more safe but it is fun and different. From concerts to musicals, plenty are either doing virtual shows that can be rented or having outdoor shows and it is important we support our local theaters.

Live Shows And Musical Movies

There are plenty of live shows on plenty of platforms including Broadway HD, Youtube through official theater platforms, Disney Plus and more with more on the way! And besides those there is always movie adaptations or original movie musicals to sing along to and enjoy, and quite of few new ones coming soon.

Cast Albums You Missed

One fun thing I have been enjoying is listening to shows I skipped over, and made plans on which shows to see when the stage reopens. It's fun to listen and study a show you may have looked over before, and might now someday soon, I know from experience and have discovered some new favorites myself this way.

Broadway Books, Behind The Scenes, Interviews, And Documentaries

While you wait, why not learn some fun theater history? Find new facts about your favorite actors and shows or how the show was made. This is always fun and it's fun to learn more whether it is where an actor started or what the plot of the show was before it became the show we know now. There are plenty of great theater books out there, from studying Shakespeare to all the behind the scenes of Wicked.

Talk With Friends About Theater

This is great way to find new favorites, or even different versions of your favorite cast albums. Hearing a different perspective may shine a new light on a show you thought you knew and could lead to some really fun talks. Or find a show that you never heard of and it becomes your new favorite while you recommend your favorites. It's a win-win!

There are so many options to pass the time, but with the musical movies coming, it will be time to watch shows on tour once again. Though it will be some time for me, these suggestions and more will help make the wait worth it, as well as the wave of musical movies and live shows we are getting this year.

Waitress A Show That Is Easy To Love As Pie

A show based off a movie that I have never, seen but saw the musical adaptation when it was touring. The curtains rose, the lights dimmed, and the cast took to the stage. So how was this new world that I had no idea about, how would this plot unfold? As the story progressed, and the songs were sung, I not only had my questions answered but I ended up loving this show. With the news dropping of this wonderful show returning to the stage and getting a live taped version, I decided to tell why I love this show so much.

This show follows Jenna and her friends as she tries to escape her life, she is miserable and caught in a rut. And when things were not stressful enough as they could be, she discovers she's pregnant! The show has many comedic moments while covering very heavy subject material, and this is reflecting in the music as well. Some of the songs are light and fun, while others are slow and full of heart and passion. There are very few songs in this soundtrack I will not listen to, I will only skip one or two songs, minus the ones that are primarily instrumental. So many of these songs have so much heart put into them and bring the characters as well as their stories to life, while also being incredibly memorable. One of my favorite songs being "Bad Idea" which is incredibly catchy while advancing the story and feelings of those singing it.

The songs that use the background cast or a couple cast members work well, while the duet and solo songs stand tall as well. From beautiful quiet pieces such as " A Soft Place To Land" to super fun songs that left me singing along like " Never Getting Rid Of Me" and especially "When He Sees Me". Each song shows what kind of person the character is and reflects the choices they made and why. The songs progress the narrative so well while standing out and having such a great range. Not every song is my favorite, and there is a part of the show that feels unresolved or not really wrapped up or dived into, but there is so much good in this show, that my gripes are minimal to nonexistent. The music sweeping me into this world and keeping me invested in this cast, some songs may not have spoken to me, but the majority that did speak volumes, not every joke landed but most did.

When I saw this live I will also say having a live band on stage was a fun, and the sets were not the most extravagant but they set the scene just fine. The environments did lend to some fun dance numbers, while some places like the kitchen were used so effectively to give that warm and cozy feel. The kitchen is a place that Jenna likes to unwind and be herself, and the show reflects that, using the lighting to make the kitchen a place of warmth, welcoming, and a place for those in it to be vulnerable and express themselves. This show is also staged very well, and each set feels like it captures the mood it is meant to convey just as much as the songs. The instrumental pieces set the mood as well.

The writing blends comedy, serious topics, and a ton of heart together so well. This show had me laughing, crying, and cheering as the story went along. I was intrigued as well as excited to see how the music would fit into the plot. I love this show and I can not recommend it enough. The songs will stay with you and the stories are real and relatable, this show is as sweet as the pies being made in the kitchen.

Rating : Chip On My Shoulder (Really Good, 8/10 Some songs are not the best, some story elments are undercooked, but most are excellent, great humor, heart, and drama, great songs, great variety of songs, good story, amazing show)

Hamilton Is Still Great (Bonus Post)

Happy 4th of July, every time this holiday rolls around I find myself listening to 1176 and Hamilton, and I can watch this show any time I want on Disney Plus with the original cast included makes this show accessible and relevant. I have seen this show live twice on tour, and have watched it plenty of times on Disney Plus, so to ring in the holiday I decided to talk about one of my favorite shows once more.

Hamilton as many know follows the lives of the founding fathers as America was just being formed as a nation, but with a diverse cast it as the press says " America Then Played By America Now" which is so true and one could say, revolutionary. The music of the show lives and breaths life into a subject we often hear about in school, shining a different light on some and focusing on more then just the big names of the American Revolution. The show mixes comedy, drama, with a hefty dose of reality and inspiration all mixed together so perfectly that even people who do not usually attend musicals are fans. May have used Hamilton as a gateway into discovering different shows, while those who have listened to musicals all their lives have now been given something truly new.

This musical whether listened to or watched live is so moving, and powerful, it never ceases to impress me. Either with the power of the performances, the quotable lines, the unforgettable music, this show is one of a kind.

It is hard to come with things to say about this show that has not already been said, this show will last for ages to come, inspiring shows to try new music genres and bring new ideas and stories to the stage. This show is a must.

Pretty Woman The Musical

This is an album that I have not watched the film of, or never listened to before now. Based on a movie that I do not know but starring a couple actors and actress I recognize, will the album sell me on this show or is this cast album enough as it is? Let's find out.

I did not research the plot of this show, I decided to jump in head first and try to piece the plot together with the music. Some shows you can almost see the story painted out through the music, some using song to explain the plot or some conveying enough emotion to do so. This show seems to be about dreaming, finding love, deals, coming out of your shell and changing, finding what is important in life and living in Hollywood, some people have money, some don't. So a nice little romantic comedy show. Without seeing the film it was pretty fun trying to piece together an outline. A plot we have seen on stage time and time again, probably loyal to it's film, but will the music have the power to make it stand out when it's ideas are ones we have seen before.

The style of music has a little bit of  typical Broadway flare, but is mostly a rock musical, with slow rock ballads, and upbeat jams, basically all sorts of styles of rock and roll with a wide variety of instrumentation. Sometimes they swap up the instrumentation and deviate from the rock style and it can be quite grand. It feels like I have heard some of these songs done time and time again in other shows, from the " Am I in love?" songs, to the " I don't want to be here" songs. Some of them stood out and were great even if I have heard these ideas before in other shows. Some of them on the other hand, I was okay hearing just once, knowing other shows conveyed these ideas better. Some songs have excellent lyrics, and some of them sound like they may or may not have needed a rewrite (They did in my opinion). So the songs were a mixed bag, some of them had heart, and some of them were a ton of fun, but others left me wondering when they would end. I found myself pressing repeat on some, and tempted to press skip on others. A times the tone feels a little all over the place, some of the songs feel like they belong in other shows, as if this show had a set identity but not every song fits that.

Having a identity in a show is important the music will fit it like a glove, and when a musical picks on specific genre and sticks to it, it can help make that show stand out, but if it strays from that, you could leave audiences feeling mixed. When you rely heavily on genre and explore all areas of it, you could not only make a show that covers a great story but represents a genre of music well.

In terms of a ratio I found it being close to 50/50. Some of the rock songs had me banging my head, and some others left me indifferent. The songs about dreams were great, but I found myself straying from the love songs after they ended, I did not feel a ton of chemistry in them. In terms if I would see this romantic comedy play out on stage, I would potentially see it on tour depending on budget and what shows would be in the my local tour line up. But I could definitely see myself seeing this in a civic theater, this show has the feel that it would be really fun in a civic theater line up. The cast is decently sized like many shows based on movies, and it has great use of ensemble, so I would definitely see this on a smaller scale, and potentially see it on tour, maybe.

Score: Finish The Hat (Not every song was a winner but would see this in a civic theater. There are some fun songs, great use of ensemble, some are really great jams, some skippable ones, generic plot points that have been played out in other shows, by the number musical number themes)

Before I close today's post, here are the songs I really enjoyed and would like to recommend, that I did enjoy.

What Movies Will We Get A Musicals Next

With Broadway returning I am certain that it will only be a matter of time before more films that were not musicals to begin with get a musical version to call their own. There are already talks of shows such as Thelma And Louise to get a musical, and Moulin Rouge is super popular at the music, musicals based on movies are going no where. So I decided to predict which ones I think are likely to make it from the screen to the stage.

. In The Heights Revival:

This was technically a musical first, but right now all the buzz is about the movie, I will not be surprised if the show returns to the stage, maybe even carrying over some of the writing changes from the film, to not only sell the film more but potentially change the stage version as well.

.Tangled Or Moana

Disney's last romp was Freaky Friday which did not catch on well, so with giant set pieces, the success of Frozen as well as their other shows, my guess is Tangled or Moana will be the next to take the stage. Big epic songs, maybe even new ones from the returning song writers Lin Manuel Miranda and Alan Menkin who did the music for the Tangled television show, and we could have so more epic Disney adventures on our hands.

. Ferris Buellers Day Off

Movies from the 1980's are really big on Broadway at the moment, and I think this one would fit as a down to earth, fun, comedic romp for audiences.

.Selena

With the Netflix show out, I feel that visiting the Biopic movie and putting her music into a show would not only be plausible but would be a hit with audiences

So these are a couple guesses that I feel would make a great Broadway musical, and are likely to happen in the future, these are my guesses and there are plenty of surprises when it comes to musicals. Some of these may happen, some may not, who knows what the future holds, but I thought it would be fun to take a guess.

Big Fish: A Story Of Fathers And Imgaination

This show deserves much more credit then it deserves. So to ring in Father's day this year, I decided to discuss a show that revolves around the bond of a father and son. Following the film, this show follows an adult son who is getting ready to become a father himself and trying to make peace with his father, who has a knack for telling elaborate stories to describe real life events. To his father doing work and business deals is fighting dragons, and when you fall in love time itself stops. His son does not see eye to eye, believing most of these stories to be not only exaggerations of normal life events but also some to be entirely false. With a few heavy subjects raising the stakes that I do not dare spoil, the two must learn to see where the other is coming from, not just for their sake but for those around them who insist they have more in common then they think.

This show did not run for long, having few performances before closing, but this show lives in local theater productions to this day, but should it come back or stay gone? I for one love so many of the songs in this show, and I highly recommend you look into it. There are so many fun and upbeat songs as well as a few inspiring songs as well. This show has such a strong opening that sets the tone for the rest of the show, " Be The Hero Of Your Story" is such a great opening song. And as you continue to listen so many of the songs are full of charm and heart. I am not a fan of every song in this soundtrack but I do love enough to want to see it on stage.

As you listen to it, there is so much love in these songs. The storyline is paired with the music work hand and hand to make such a memorable experience. Whether the song has a ton of fun elements as the stories come to life, or a more quiet moment as the show tugs at your heart strings. This show has a great balance of instrumentation that a ton of tracks sound unique, I highly recommend giving this show a listen.

This show is not just perfect for fathers day but any day really if you want a show with a ton of heart, and a ton of fun as well. It grips you with it's first song and even though it falters here and there it stays true with its message throughout and has plenty of songs that are so great it is worth at least one listen.
