Musical Moments Of 2018

2018 was a wonderful year for musicals, on stage, and on screen. The year started strong with " The Greatest Showman" and had other musical hits such as " Mama Mia, Here I Go Again " and " Mary Poppins Returns ". " Hamilton " and " Dear Evan Hansen" continued to wow larger crowds and expand to two casts on top of their Broadway counterparts in New York. New shows like " The Band's Visit" which swept the Tonys and appearance" The Prom"  made big splashes while revivals such as " Once on This Island" brought wonderful classics to new audiences.  Musicians like Cher and Donna Summers got musical depicting their work to join ranks with " Beautiful The Carole King Musical" and  " Jersy Boys".  2018 showed rising audiences for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and other theater companies as more people discover again and again this wonderful escape from the everyday.

I myself discovered new songs to listen to for years to come, saw a show or two on different fronts from traveling Broadway casts to the civic theater,  and listened to albums of shows I will hopefully see performed in some shape or form. I looked shows I may have skipped over or musicals that I had only heard about and found some wonderful performances and melodies.

In the end, theater really is fantastic, and I hope the next year you can find a new favorite cast album and perhaps see a show or two, whether it be a favorite ot something new. I hope this new year is a showstopper for you.

happy new year

happy new year, may you have a showstopping 2019 and a wonderful happy new year

Musical Idea: Home Alone The Musical

A thought has seemed to come across my mind on multiple occasions when thinking about Christmas musicals " Christmas Story and Elf have a musical, why doesn't home alone?" I feel that the show could much like " Christmas Story The Musical" could have a huge appeal to families during the holiday season, the film is considered a holiday classic, and you could have a nice big ensemble cast with the family members and cut back and forth between them and Kevin. The villains would be delightfully entertaining and goofy, plus with the themes of family and the holidays, there is also plenty of room for heartfelt moments. I think it could work and would fit in with the other holiday musicals, but it's just an idea. I do enjoy pitching musical adaptations for movies that were not musicals to begin with, and with no sign of stopping in the trend of making these adaptations, some of these pitches just may come true

Elf The Musical

As we are approaching the holiday season, I look back on a musical that I used to listen to, in fact, " Elf The Musical" was the first musical I listened to that was based on a movie that was not a musical beforehand. I enjoy the show. The songs fit well with the tone of the source material and some of the songs a part of my holiday Broadway playlist. Returning to it after some time away from it, I still find plenty of the songs enjoyable, the plot doesn't stray from the movie and keeps the tone light which knowing the original source material is a must. Some of the songs have heartfelt moments and fit so well, while some of the other numbers are big and like to add a layer of pizzaz to the holidays.
I recommend the show if you loved the film and want a fun show to celebrate the holidays.
If you find a local production of it, but do not know if you want to see it, here are a few songs I recommend that showcase the show very well.

Christmastown

World's Greatest Dad

Sparklejollytwinklejingely

I'll Believe In You

A Christmas Song

The Story Of Buddy The Elf

I hope your holidays are a showstopper

Musical Idea: Confessions Of A Shopoholic

Recently I have been looking into " Freaky Friday The Musical" ( review to come in the near future
), and I found it super interesting that a new musical, is not only on stage but was also performed on " Disney Channel" and the licensing rights became available very shortly after, so I am sure at least a few high schools may attempt this recent musical outing by Disney, but then I wondered, would any other Disney movies fit as musicals, even if they didn't begin as a musical much like  " Freaky Friday"?  Many posts ago I pitched the idea of a musical based on " The Prent Trap" and I still stand by that, but what if " Confessions Of A Shopoholic" was a musical? With the rise in musicals based on movies, I have wondered what film will be adapted next.

I could be completely wrong, but I wonder if this movie could transition to the stage, but I have decided to run through what a hypothetical musical version would look like.

The show would follow the plot of the movie, but maybe will expand on our leads deep love of shopping, as well as expand on side characters, or dd side characters, I feel like the story could add more laughs or character moments with a longer running time. But this is just an idea, what movies would you make into a musical? I hope your day is a showstopper

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend

I hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving weekend, whether you are working, shopping, or relaxing, I hope you have a fantastic weekend, thank you for reading these posts, I have some big projects and fun ideas coming up, for newer shows , holiday-themed ideas and some other ideas in between.  I hope your day is a showstopper

Dear Evan Hansen

One show that has been on my mind is " Dear Evan Hansen" this is not a review or another installment of " Judging a Book By Its Album Cover" I just wanted to talk about the show. Recently I picked up "Dear Evan Hansen: Waving Through A Window" the companion book with the script, behind the scenes, making of, pictures of the show and much more. The book makes me appreciate the show even more, and it makes me want more companion books for more shows, which will be a topic I go into greater detail in the near future. Not only do I highly recommend the book but the show itself, the way it handles life, social media, and identity is one of a kind.

" Dear Evan Hansen" captures so many raw emotions just in its emotions, that when you see the dialogue paired with it, that left me speechless, I have not seen the show yet, but with the upcoming tour, I sure will be making an effort to.

The soundtrack is a must, and It sets a show in highschool, covers real topics, yet is not cliched while covering very real issues. I love the show so much that I find myself looking up covers and different renditions on youtube. Though I plan on going deeper in more posts in the future I will recommend 5 songs just for those who haven't looked into the show, that I feel showcase the show well and may prove to be an ideal starting point.

Waving Through A Window

For Forever

Sincerely Me

You Will Be Found

Only Us

This could be a start, and if you truly enjoy the show, maybe you two will pick up the companion book. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Break Is Over: Refocusing The Blog

Before I went on this break  tried so many different styles of posts, some worked and some didn't  after some time away and listening to some new shows among my favorites, and instead of trying making posts that go into categories, I am going to simplify things, the only ongoing posts that will be kept the same as they were before the break is " Judging A Book By Its Album Cover" and List? song recommendation Catagories, everything else is just grouped into theater based discussion, whether it's a live show I saw, a book I read, a live recording I saw, the list goes on. It will make things easier for me to find topics to discuss instead of trying to give a given series proper attention. It's good to be back, and until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Taking A Short Break

This blog will be barren for a short while, I feel creatively exhausted. I want to rethink this blog, rework some workings of this blog. I want to give this blog a unique identity and make posts that I feel confident in, not continue to try new styles constantly. Until then, I hope you enjoy the contents of the older posts.

Mama Mia : Review And Discussion

Recently I saw a civic theater production of  " Mama Mia" It also  has been quite some time since I reviewed a show and compared a filmed version of a show to the staged version, So today I decided
to talk about the " ABBA" inspired jukebox hit " Mama Mia" Now I mean the first film being compared to the staged version, as there is no sequel to the staged version, unlike the movie. As confusing as that is. Time for an updated take on, " Stage V.s Screen" That is slightly more compact and to the point, by also reviewing the show, killing two birds with one stone here we go.
Before we get into the review and comparison there is a question or two to be asked. Do you like the music of " ABBA" ? If yes then you will definitely enjoy the show, If not then it is probably a good idea to try listening to another show you are interested in , if you enjoy their works but you don't want a story, you are better off buying cd or watching music videos. If you are still interested then let me help you decide what version you may like more.

set on a resort island in Greece the story follows a girl named Sophie, right before her wedding as she tries to invite the three men, one whom she believes to be her father to walk her down the isl, without telling her mother about her three ex boy friends arrival, comedy and antics ensue in this very tongue and cheek, lighthearted show.

The writing is very quick and witty, and if a joke doesn't land, another one is not very far behind, if you need an upbeat show that you can just show up, and have fun, this would not be a bad pick, seeing it live, I found myself laughing more than I thought I would, but the show has a simple plot so it can be more crazy with the humor, and on plenty of occasions it works. Some parts are the story are basic and predictable, and sometimes the dialogue is a giveaway to what song they are going to use, but it is fun, so this complaint is minor.

When it comes to the music, the soundtracks are equals, unlike some movie adaptations, all the songs are kept in, which then leaves the comparison to the performances. In my case I preferred the stage version, yes the movie is easier to watch, but seeing it live felt more energetic feeling then just watching the movie, when the singing is lived and the actors are right in front of you, yes the movie had tons of work put into the choreography and singing as well, but I personally enjoyed it more live. Some of the actors in the film seems chosen more for their status as actors  rather than their ability to sing. In my opinion if you option to see it live then that is the version I recommend, or listening to the album of your choosing if you are unsure, for version that stands out to you more. If you are unsure, renting the film may be a safer bet then paying for a theater ticket, but as stated earlier, it all comes down to whether you want a musical using " ABBA" music in it.  For some recommendations on tracks if you just want to listen to the album, here are my favorite songs

Mama Mia

Thank You For The Music

Dancing Queen

Under Attack

Voules Vouex

Take A Chance On Me

There are my thoughts, thank you for reading and I hope your day is a showstopper.

Judging A Show By Its Cast Album : School Of Rock

It feels like yesterday when I saw the movie " School Of Rock" starring Jack Black, I remember the film fondly, but when the musical adaptation was announced and being done by Andrew Loyd Weber I was intrigued. Time to give this a show a look, and see if I would see it based on the Broadway cast recording.

The plot follows washed up wannabe rock star Dewey, posing as his friend Ned Sheebly at a very pretentious school, when he sees the kids playing music well, he tries to get them to cut loose, break from their norms, and compete in a battle of the bands.

As you can tell this by the title most of the tracks are rock, but there are some breaks from the guitar strumming and head banging. The chorus and songs are mostly performed by Dewey and the kid, If you like shows that have big child casts such as " Annie" or " Matilda" I will Say the kids on this album did very good.

As the title also indicates the choice of instrumentation used, if you watched the film, the few songs that are played in the movie make a return among the original pieces. I found myself enjoying the show more in the second half, so much so that I found myself playing the second half on repeat, the soundtrack is mostly upbeat, but there re a few slow songs that are a refreshing change of pace. I am interested to see how some of the scenes play out, I do not know if I would see a Broadway tour right out the gate, I have seen many high schools and civic theaters putting this show on, so I may want to test the grounds there and see how the story plays out, if the dialogue is fun and fits the lighthearted nature well. But if you enjoy rock, then you may find yourself rocking along to the soundtrack.  Here are the tracks I enjoyed

Here At Horace Green

If Only You Would Listen

Faculty Quadrille

Stick It To The Man (L)

Time To Play

Where Did The Rock Go?

Act 2 Scene 8 : Dewey's Bedroom

School Of Rock ( Teacher's Pet) (L)

If you are unsure about seeing a show, listening to the cast album is an easy way to test the waters before buying a ticket, until next time I hope your day is a showstopper.

Lessons I Learned From Broadway : Tomorrow

Theater can be more then entertain, it can teach us as well, and I want to share some of the lessons I've learned from shows. Today I wanted to share a lesson I learned in optimism from the classic song " Tomorrow" from " Annie" .

This song teaches us the importance looking ahead, sometimes we may feel stuck in a rut.
it has such uplifting lyrics completed by a simple melody. This song reminds us to view life with that childhood innocence and optimism no matter how old we are, we may see many days that are gray and lonely, but the sun could come out tomorrow. It reminds us to face every day with a smile, every time I listen to this it reminds me to stay positive, no matter what the day looks like. a song for anyone having a bad day.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Judging A Show By Its Cast Album : 1776

As mentioned in the last post there was another musical about the revolution and that was " 1776"  does this 1969 winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical hold up? Would I see it if revived or in a civic theater? Let's find out

The show follows the moments leading to the founding of The United States of America, mainly revolving around The Declaration of Independence, following from the perspectives of John and Abigail Adams, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. As the Continental Congress faces the trails of founding a nation. John Adams is often written off in favor of other founding fathers so a show featuring him is interesting but also adds tons of room for good comedy, so I enjoy the premise. This musical is lighthearted and comedic , not very historically accurate. But what about the music?

The music is enjoyable and is done in a classic Broadway style, the lyrics are quick, sometimes comedic and often very alliterate, the melodies and lyrics work very well together. The female leads are few but they stand out as much as their male counterparts. The songs are more often fast paced and I found myself enjoying quite a few of them. Here are the songs I found myself enjoying the most

Piddle Twiddle and Resolve/ Till Then (L)

The Lees Of Old Virginia

But Mr Adams (L)

He Plays The Violin

Cool Cool Considerate Men

The Egg

Is Anybody There

Overall I found the music enjoyable and would not mind seeing the whole story play out, if the lyrics provided some good comedy I am optimistic that the dialogue would do so as well. Also being a fan of history I wouldn't mind giving it a try, I only wish there were more songs sung by the very small amount of female leads. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs We Love: Tonight /Tonight ( Quintet)

Some cinemas will be showing " West Side Story" in the coming weeks, the classic Stephen Sondheim telling of " Romeo and Juliet"  but in the streets of New York. Today I wanted to talk about two versions of the same song that are both amazing.

The first version of " Tonight" starts slow and builds, becoming an amazing love song, perfectly describing the feeling of finding the person you have been waiting for. The other is an epic build up before a major event that will change the course of the story, and also a great lead up to intermission.

Both of them have similar instrumental themes but both are different enough to be two separate songs, and the instrumentation is nothing short of amazing. paired with fantastic lyrics as well. They both stir up great emotion and get you excited to see what comes next. The quintet is so great at using the whole cast, in an amazing harmony. The two part harmony in the other version is also nothing short of incredible.

Both versions are amazing, I say look into them, both for different versions, both should not be overlooked. Until next time, I hope your day is showstopper.

Movies That Could Make Good Broadway Musicals ( Reprise)

There is news going around that " The Greatest Showman" is getting a Broadway adaptation, which I hope is true, that would be amazing .T hat got me thinking what movies could be made into musicals. Here are some ideas, and feel free to share the movies that you think could make great musicals.

The Nutty Professor : " Jekyll and Hyde" is pretty popular, why not the comedic counterpart? It could be a ton of fun

The Parent Trap :  Disney made " Newsies" and " Freaky Friday" into well received Broadway adaptations besides the adaptations based on animated movies, I think this one could be tons of fun, and have great duets.

The Princess Bride:  One of my favorite movies of all time, a great classic, and it has so much comedy, wit, charm, and memorable characters that a musical adaptation could be cool.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Broadway Summer Plans

Many areas have their Broadway seasons coming to close, here are some ideas to still have a summer full of theater and all that jazz

Check Out Your Local Civic Theater

Civic theaters usually go all year round, see some fun shows, maybe discover a new favorite, or be a part of show whether it be acting or behind the scenes.

See Musical Movie Events in Your Local Movie Theater

Some live recordings of shows such as " Bandstand" and " Newsies " are coming to local movie theaters, which could be a fun outing and you would still be seeing a show, speaking of live recordings...

Check Netflix/ Broadway HD

Sometimes you don't have to leave your own home to watch some great plays and musicals, Netflix has some live recordings, movie adaptations, and concerts, and Broadway HD has plenty of shows to watch.

Write A Play

Maybe you have an idea worth sharing, you could write a musical or a play, it could be super fun and you never know, it could be performed at your local civic theater, and even more.

Throw A Broadway Themed Party

Referring to a post I made recently, get some friends together and have a musical party.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Judging A Show By Its Cast Album : The Band's Visit

When the Tony Awards began there was a show that I knew of but did not really look into, admits all my hype for " Spongebob Sqaurepants The Musical" and " Mean Girls The Musical".  A few days before the ceremony I began to listen to the soundtrack, and after an amazing performance at said ceremony I listened to the rest of the cast album shortly after. Now that I have listened to the songs plenty of times, would I pay to see this show, not including the amazing performance at the Tonys. Let's find out

The plot follows an Arab police band from Egypt as they are taken to the wrong location for the gig, in a town in the middle of nowhere with a primarily Jewish population. The show is a comedy with a heartfelt message of unity.

The music is great and one of a kind, the instrumentation is fantastic and there are some tracks that are only instrumental which are incredible.  When there is singing it is nothing short of phenomenal, all the singers are amazing, with great lyrics, that either have great emotional movements to relate to, and some times infuses some comedy. The songs all have great pacing and flow, all sounding unique. Here are some of my favorites that had me tapping repeat over and over.

Waiting

Welcome To Nowhere (L)

The Beat Of Your Heart (L)

Soraya

Omar Sharif

Haj-Butrus

Papi Hears The Ocean

Haleds Song About Love

Something Different

Answer Me

The Concert

I would see this show,  I am so glad I listened to this, so many of the songs have been added to my playlist, I loved the soundtrack and the premise. I highly recommend giving some of these songs a listen, they are great and some of the love songs are nothing short of heartfelt or beautiful, sometimes funny too.  Great melodies, great lyrics. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Introduce us to new songs, new shows, new experiences. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs That We Love : Before the Parade Passes By

Today I would like to discuss the dong " Before The Parade Passes By" from the classic show " Hello Dolly". this song has inspiration, as well as creative and catchy lyrics.

This song is nothing short of inspiring. Wanting to live life to the fullest and comparing it to a parade that can bring joy to your life is a great allegory.  The lyrics talk about sitting on the sidelines for too long but joining in the parade just int time. Much like " Open A New Window " from " Mame" the melody has that classic feeling, that still uses many instruments to create an anthem, as you want to join in and sing along. The lyrics inspire the listener to follow suit, and not give up. This is a classic that should not be looked over.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Favorite Lyric:
                             With the rest of them
                              With the best of them
I can hold my head up high
For I got a goal again

Spongebob Squarepants The Musical : Revisit

Recently I decided to look back into " Spongebob Squarepants The Musical"  and I must say, the show has grown on me, I originally said I was half and half on the show, but as I listened to the soundtrack more, I realized that it is fun, enjoyable and has plenty of heart. Sure I'm not a fan of every song, but just like " Mean Girls" the songs I like, I really like. This show has proven that if enough heart is put into something, you can make a musical out of anything, even a cartoon. I changed my mind, instead of maybe wanting to see it, I definitely would see it if given the chance.
This show has won me over, and it has given me the idea of maybe revising other shows I have written off for whatever reason.

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Quick Thoughts: Countdown To The Tony Awards

The Tony Awards are upon us, I am incredibly excited. I really don't know what show will walk away with more awards, I have only listened to a handful of the shows that are up for nominations, so I hope the performances introduce me to some new favorites, just in time for summer. Will Sponegbob take a tony back to his pineapple under the sea? Or will the plastics be ruling the night? Maybe the band will play a tune of victory. only time will tell, for a fan of theater, the Tony Awards feels like the super bowl. I am incredibly excited

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Broadway Party Ideas

Summer is here. Time to grab some friends and throw a Broadway themed bash. Here are some fun Broadway themed party ideas based on our favorite shows.

Hairspray/ Grease Era Party: Why not go back to the 50's and 60's. have some dancing and some punch, and wrap it up by watching the live versions of the respected show you picked

Tony Awards : Grab some snacks, get some friends together, make super bowl style predictions on the winners and maybe have prizes, watch fun performances and discover new shows together.

Costume For Your Show Of Choice: Maybe a masquerade just like in " Phantom of the Opera" or dress up like fairy tale characters and watch " Into the Woods" plus with the multiple versions to watch this could be fun.

Whether you take my ideas or different ones, these are fun to try. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Can T.V Shows Be Made Into Broadway Musicals ?

After listening to " Spongebob Squarepants The Musical" and remembered " Addams Family The Musical" I wondered could more television shows be made into Broadway musicals. Could they just be like extended episodes of their respected shows. Plenty of movies get musical adaptations and I wondered if television could too. If Spongebob continues to do well I think we just may, and as long as the story is good and interesting, and the music is good I don't care if the concept is original or based off of an existing property, there is so much variety in theater that there is something for everyone.  Here are some T.V shows that I think would make good musicals

I Love Lucy :  A fun musical comedy, with great romance and comedy. I would be thoroughly interested if someone tried this.

Seinfeld: A musical comedy about nothing

Cheers: A fun musical that would have comedy and a ton of heart

Smash: A musical show, it could potentially transfer to the stage well. Plus a show about theater would be fun, shows about putting on shows are always great to remind us why we love theater to begin with.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs That We Love: Right Hand Man ( Something Rotten)

This is an amazing female lead song, it has comedy, heart and great lyrics. the song I'm talking about is " Right Hand Man" from " Something Rotten" . This show has plenty of great songs but today I wanted to focus on a solo number.

This song is incredibly catchy, and there were moments in the song that left me laughing when I first listened to it and I still love listening to many times over. The idea of being so supportive and being a strong female met with the juxtaposition of being in the Renascence is a great concept alone, and the lyrics do not disappoint. It's fast paced and bouncy which fits right alongside many songs in this show and is full of charm. the lyrics have speed but they fit the melody like a glove.

The back and fourth , with her giving a perfect rebuttal leads to great comedy, and shows her devotion as a wife. The song shows someone wanting to help, wanting to jump in and save the day,  even if they were never asked. This song is not one pass to by, it may not be the longest , nor grandest, but the emotions it portrays are not only you can relate to, but this is a very fun song. Until Next time, I hope your day is showstopper .

Favorite Lyric:  There's no problem that's to big
When your'e married that's the gig
So don't be a sexist pig

Judging A Show By Its Cast Album : Mean Girls the Musical

As the Tony Awards draw closer and closer, It is time to look at the nominees and this a musical I have anticipated greatly, the musical adaptation of " Mean Girls" but would I see this show, based on listening to the album, is this show fetch? Let's find out.

The show follows  the film Cady as she goes from living with her parents in Africa on safaris, as she transfers to an American high school she discovers all the cliques as well as the top clique helmed by Regina George, this group known as the plastics is not only the most popular group but also the most mean. Cady befriends social outcasts Damien and Janis and try to take down Regina after she hurts Cady over a boy Cady likes, making Cady come off as mean girl to get close to Regina, until she becomes one. There are differences from the film to make the show unique, while still carrying over plenty of hilarious moments from the film

The music is pretty good, I am not a fan of every song but the songs that I enjoy I really enjoy, there are many different styles depending on the character but I enjoyed many of the songs and have listened to many of the songs multiple times, some more then others. I will say that the script transitions into some of the lyrics very well, so major fans of the film will know some of the lyrics just by quoting the movie, and that is incredibly smart.  And the original lyrics are hilarious, catchy, or both. Here are my favorite songs, that I recommend looking into for your playlist.

It Roars

Where Do You Belong (L)

Stupid With Love

What's Wrong With Me

Stupid with Love Reprise (L)

Revenge Party (L)

Fearless

World Burn (L)

I'd Rather Be Me ( My Personal Favorite)

Do This Thing ( L)

I See Stars ( My Other Personal Favorite)

So would I see this show if the opportunity arose, yes i would. Even if I don't like every song, the songs I listed are incredible, and the ones I didn't list , you may like. I really enjoy the movie, and this transitioned over very well, the message of being  yourself and being decent to each other still stands strong, now told with amazing songs. There is also still plenty of hilarious moments, and I bet seeing it live would be even more funny with dialogue, facial expressions, on top of the lyrics that are comedic.  I would see this show, until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs I Skipped: Franklin Shepard Inc.

Here is a new post idea I like to call songs I skipped, where I look at songs I may have glanced over  before.

After I looked at  the cast album to review " Merrily We Roll Along" , I decided I wanted to see it and I have continued to listen to the show and add my favorite tracks to my playlists. There was a song that I skimmed over as I was wrapped up in other tracks about dreams and such. But recently I was listening to some of the tracks that I didn't listen to as much as others , then I listened to " Franklin Shepard Inc." a few more times and grew a new appreciation for it.

" Merrily We Roll Along" begins with an ending of a story and works backwards to see how the characters reached that moment, as things move backwards the tone goes from dramatic to more inspiring, this song is earlier in the show as Charley and Frank hit the point where they break off their friendship.

Not only is this song catchy but there is so much depth to it. Since the show gives you the friendship at the end, it still has the impact as if you had watch the friendship grow before hitting that breaking point, even if that part does come later.

The lyrics entail so much about friendship and what can be thrown away in pursuit of your dream. It deals with real situations like growing apart and selling out, all while providing an upbeat tune and lyrics you can sing along to, the contrast is fascination g yet it works so well.  Even as the song slows down near the end, you feel that Charley has very valid points, and with the song " Growing Up" you see Frank's side earlier on as well as a turning point.

This song has emotion in it too as you feel Charley is not only in a place he does not want to be, but he is making a plea for a friendship he misses. my favorite part isn't even a lyric, it's a spoken line

Charley: Listen, Frank does the money thing very well. But you know what?  Other people do it better, and Frank does the music thing very well. And you know what? No one does it better.

The mention in the line speaks it all, the added bonus is the great song surrounding that, I'm glad I went back to it. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Judging A Show By Its Cast Album: Beautiful The Carole King Musical

Welcome to another edition of Judging A Book By It's Album Cover, where I decide if I want to see a show live based on reading the plot synopsis as well as listening to a cast recording, the show I am looking into today is the jukebox hit " Beautiful The Carole King Musical". I have never listened to Carole King's music, will this show sell me or will I be taking this locomotion elsewhere.

The plot follows the life and career of the musician Carole King, as well as her relationships and music. The plot is simple, but by reading the plot synopsis there are a few twists and turns, someone who has been a fan of Carole King will know what happens but I was surprised.

The music is great, It definitely makes me want to look up her music, I definitely liked the second half more then the first, but there were some songs I found myself listening to multiple times, I will say I liked it more as I went along. There is one minor complaint, after doing some research, this show cut some songs short, and it left me wondering if maybe they could of used less songs and then used the full versions of these very good songs. But those two notes are my only complaints, these songs may be short, but they are still good. short but sweet. There is a good mix of slow and fast songs, songs to reflect and songs that make you want to boogie.  If you are curious to add some of these to your next playlist or to look into for yourself, here are some of my favorite songs from the show.

Will You Love Me ( 2nd Version)

Up On The Roof

On Broadway

The Locomotion

You've Lost That Lovin

One Fine Day

Walking In The Rain

Uptown

It's Too Late

You've Got A Friend

Beautiful

I Feel The Earth Move

As I listened more and more, I thoroughly enjoyed this soundtrack, I want to read and learn more about Carole King, and I want to see this on stage to see how the songs are incorporated with the story, when I listen to soundtracks first, it's always a treat to see how it plays out on stage. This is a very different musical, and now I am more open to the idea of more jukebox musicals based on musicians and showcasing their work at the same time. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Songs That We Love: Bikini Bottom Day

This song is a great opening and the whole cast welcomes the audience into the world it has created so well, This song is " Bikini Bottom Day " from " Spongebob Squarepants the Musical".

The song has a great melody, but as the first song it does such a great job introducing each character, showing their personality types, and sets up some plot lines, all with catchy and fun lyrics as well.
The song is fun and light, full of cheer and optimism. It introduces the lead and the rest of the cast giving each of them a moment to shine, whether your'e a fan of the show or not. Fans of the show will note that the song has lyrics  that make the show feel like an extended episode of the show, but also makes it enjoyable for someone who has not.. The lyrics are full of joy and optimism, showing the how the lead faces the day, and it left me smiling from beginning to end.

Favorite Lyric: Ensemble: It's a typical
                           Spongebob : Incredible

Broadway Break Up Songs

Originally this was a post  I intended for around valentines day, but  I decided to leave it on the back burner among a few other ideas, until I found enough material or really thought about a topic in depth. And now I am ready to share some of my favorite Broadway songs for breaking up. What show tunes do you think are good for break ups? There are so many Broadway love songs, yet what about the other side of the coin. Here are my picks .

Goodbye " Catch Me If You Can "

I'm Not A Loser " Spongebob Squarepants The Musical"

On My Own " Les Miserables "

Mama Mia " "

Burn " Hamilton"

So Much Better (L) " Legally Blonde "

Legally Blonde Remix " Legally Blonde "

Find My Way ?Finale " Legally Blonde "

You've Lost That Lovin " Beautiful The Carole King Musical

Sandy " Grease"

Hopelessly Devoted To You " Grease"

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs That We Love: Waving Through A Window

This song is amazing, "Dear Even Hansen" has many fantastic pieces but today we will focus on the showstopping  " Waving Through A Window".

Songs like this in other shows would be right before intermission this show only decided to blow everyone away right after the introduction, it has an excellent display of character, with powerful lyrics that are undeniable to relate to. This song has so much depth and emotion, coupled with the upbeat melody this song is nothing short of unforgettable.

The feelings displayed are real, on top of brilliant lyrics as Evan opens up to audience as the great use of the ensemble showed how even someone in a crowd can feel isolated.  The ensemble add  so well to the theme of the song by being there but not interacting with Evan, thus showing his outsider status from yet another angle on top of the lyrics.

This song is one that should not be skipped. Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Favorite Lyric: Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
                              I'm waving through a window

Five Broadway Songs To Start The Day

Mornings can be rough, whether it's school, work, projects, or lack of sleep. Here are some of my favorite songs to start the day off with. And feel free to share yours, It's always fun to discover new songs and even new shows. Here are my picks for five songs to welcome the new day with.

5. Open A New Window (Mame) : Why not begin the day by opening a new window, singing a new song, this song inspires and reminds that sometimes trying something new, though unfamiliar can lead to great experiences.

4. Sunrise ( In The Heights) : One of the more calm songs in the show, is a great way to start up a day, slowly winding into a beautiful melody, and hoping to stay past the sunrise.

3. Carrying the Banner/ Seize the Day (L) ( Newsies) : Two songs, both make you want to jump into your day and give one hundred percent, one fun, and one inspiring. I just couldn't pick, both of them will have you wanting to seize the day, humming along all the way.

2. Good Morning Baltimore ( Hairspray): Why not start off the day with a fresh outlook,, a great beat also helps, as the city wakes up and new day begins, greeting it with optimism and speaking of which.

1. Bikini Bottom Day ( Spongebob Squarepants the Musical) : This song inspired this post, much like the song listed before, greeting a new day with optimism is great to add to your morning routine. This song greets the day with a great melody as well as great use of the entire ensemble to make a great beginning to the show and your day.

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs That We Love: Seventy Six Trombones

Sometimes a reprise sums creates a short yet catchy take on a familiar tune, and sometimes they are more such is the case with " Seventy Six Trombones" from the classic show " Music Man"

The song opens with a reprise of the song " Ya Got Trouble" but instead of just being a simple reprise the song changes completely into a new song. Starting with a comedic edge and transforming into a ballad you can march along to. The words and melody are interwoven perfectly, This song as shows how likable the lead is.

" Seventy Six Trombones" has the perfect speed, melody, balance of solo and ensemble singing, comedy, and a lot of heart. this song is fantastic and is classic for a reason.

Favorite Lyric: Seventy six trombones caught the morning sun
With a hundred and ten cornets right behind
There were more than one thousand reeds springing up like weeds
There were horns of every shape and kind

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper.

Broadway Songs For Moms

Mothers Day is here, and there are plenty of  songs from musicals that are themed around moms, whether it is to our mothers or mothers singing about their duties. Here are some of my favorite Broadway songs for moms.

Piano Lessons " Music Man" : This song reminds us of what moms do, tell us as it is, even if we don't want to admit things. The melody is also nice and there are some fun jokes in this song

Proud of Your Boy " Aladdin" : A touching song that is also a  great ballad, packed with emotions that echo a truth, we all want to make our mothers proud.Just

What A Mother Does " A Christmas Story The Musical" : This song and the follow up song later " Just Like That" show what moms do. showing the chores, the meal preps, having to talk kids through difficult situations, all the nitty gritty that comes with being a mom. Two great songs.

Right Hand Man " Something Rotten" : Our moms are the " Right Hand Man" to our dads, a fun song, with some very funny moments that is a very sweet song, showing someone who want to support their spouse in any way.

Hope you have a great mothers day and until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Songs That We Love : You Can't Stop The Beat (L)

In this new style of post I wanted to try the idea of looking not a set of songs but just one. Today I decided to pick a song that I listen to quite often as of late " You Can't Stop The Beat"(L) from ""Hairspray" .

This song is one of the best finales, It uses every character well. It also displays story and morals in such a good a catchy way. This song also has funny lines, inspiring lines, and even redemption for the antagonists of the show. This is also a great song to show what the cast has learned, with lyrics that the audience could use to describe themselves.

Whether the Original Broadway Cast, the live adaptation, or the film. This song is one worth adding to every playlist.

Favorite Lyric: You can't stop today as it comes speeding down the track.
Child yesterday is history and it's never coming back.
Cause tomorrow is a brand new day and it don't know white from black!

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Musicians That I Would Like To See Get Musicals

" Summer : The Donna Summer Musical" is opening to critical acclaim and financial success, and I was thinking of musicians that I would have musicals based off of their lives, where I would not only enjoy the music but their story would be cool to hear but their stories could be shown to a mass large crowd. What musicians would you like to see musicals of? Here are my picks:

Selena : With the success of " On Your Feet", I would love to see Selena get a show, though a tradgic story her music still inspires to this day

Elvis : The king of rock n roll, this could be a fun show akin to the likes of " Jersey Boys"

Stephen Sondheim : A show about a iconic Broadway writer, with songs from all of his shows, that would be a treat .

Rogers and Hammerstein: Much like the idea behind what I said about Sondheim this Broadway duo story is one I would love to hear , with all their greatest hits.

Barbara Streisand : This could be a mix of her show tune and other work making a great show, about a phenomenal musician that would surely inspire

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper.

Here are my songs from least favorite to favorite, what are your favorite songs from the show. I will give comments on some, whether it is placing or a joke, The only rule is it is on the original cast recording, no songs that are in the liver version but on the soundtrack, no mix tape picks , or hamildrops. Feel free to share your favorites and least favorites in the comments also your favorite lyrics. Now here is the list:

46. Say No To This(L) : This is my least favorite song, not for the beat but because it in terms of the story I am so angry at Alexander, and I feel so uncomfortable but you can not rewrite history

43.Stay Alive (Reprise)

42.Stay Alive

39. Your Obedient Servant

38.The Story of Tonight  ( Reprise)

37.Winters Ball (L)

36.Blow Us All Away (L) : I love the beat on this one, but Philip isn't in much of the show, you still feel emotional impact based on events that transpire in his life, I wish he showed up a tad more.

35.  Best Of Wives Best Of Women

34. Farmer Refuted :The two part harmony in this song is amazing

33.We Know : Jefferson " Whaaaaaat"

32.The Reynolds Pamphlet (L)

22. Burn :  Powerful lyrics that cover a part of history we can only speculate about in such a smart way

16.Helpless : Such a cute love song

15.Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story : Very real finale with a great epilogue using strong words from Act 1

9. Wait For It( L) :This shows a real side of Burr, posing  completely different ideas then what we have being hearing from Hamilton so far , and why Burr holds them. For those who want something yet are only left with closed doors and questions, we wait for it. The beat is also amazing

8.History Has It's Eyes On You : The words hold so much weight to them, showing that even the most minor of actions lead to bigger results intended or not, so what do you do with them, in aquiet moment before Yorktown this moment pack on emotion

2.Alexander Hamilton (L)  : This song earned a place this high for being the first, for being a solid introduction and plot summary, for being the one that started it all, showing why Hamilton's story should be told, from a very tragic beginning to becoming a hero and a scholar

1. My Shot (L) : My absolute favorite, the song I have listened to on repeat, the beat, the lyrics, the use of solo and ensemble singing, this song has also inspired me time and time again not to give up, that dreams are attainable. Finale: Classic Musical Month

This has been quite the journey, reminding myself of classics that I loved as well as finding new favorites. There are a few more classics that I want to look at in the future but I want to add more modern musicals and ideas into the mix as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would definitely do it again, maybe a different month. But after this and the themed love month in February, the next themed month will probably be in the second half of the year when I can come up with a cool idea, but there will be a lot of tony discussion, coverage, and reviews come late may and early June as the event comes closer . Until  next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Ways to Experience the Classics

There are times we discover a show to only find the sad truth that it has not run in twenty plus years so how can we enjoy classic shows, since time travel has yet to be invented. Here are a few ideas

Check Your Civic Theater or Local High School :  Sometimes Broadway revivals are not enough, or the show you want to see has no revival or has any plans to be revived in the near future,  but schools and civic theaters are always looking for a variety of shows to perform speaking of which...

Encourage Your Local Theater or High School to Perform A Classic Show : If you are in a position to put on shows, maybe a classic is what you need to switch things up, besides many are either public domain or are easier to perform then other shows.

Find a Film Adaptation:  There are many classic film musicals that are just as if not more popular then their stage counterparts, you could even have a classic musical library of adaptions or live taping of shows

Listen to the Soundtrack:  Definitely add it to your regular playlists, find your favorites, and share it with fellow theater fans you know, you may even introduce them to a new favorite of theirs.

Read Up On the History of Your Favorites: Sometimes what brings life to a classic you have enjoyed and listened to over and over, maybe even seen, is reading up on the writing process, how it was written, the writer's other works, and  the writer themselves.

Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Shows I've Seen Reviews: Taming Of The Shrew

When I was talking about Shakespeare the other day, thinking of the last show the bard penned that I saw, It was a college production of " Taming Of The Shrew" and why not review it as the end of the month celebrates Shakespeare.

The plot begins with a  drunk man stopping at a local Inn and being told he is a lord and is distracted with  the story of  Katherina the " Shrew" who frightens any male suitor, while more men want to marry her younger sister Bianca, their father wants the elder to wed first, meanwhile Hortensio and Gremio try to win over the younger sister with many schemes to win her over, including disguises  as the adventurous Petruchio takes on the task of trying to win over the older sister.

The best thing about Shakespeare shows is that there is no direct setting, so you can have s how set in the old west or even during modern day. The production I saw was performed with costumes and sets that are straight from the time period , which were still nice and well made.

This show is funny, there are many puns, surprises and all keeping with the fact that the entire show is a show itself being put on, giving the idea that some parts or lines are being added on the spot. This comedy is very well written, and makes me want to look into more Shakespeare comedies as I am more familiar with the tragedies.

If you can see a production of this show or read the book, I recommend it, I had plenty of fun. Until next time I hope your day is a showstopper

Shows I've Seen Review: Annie

Many of us know of little orphan Annie, and many of us have heard the song " Tomorrow" in one form or fashion. Well after seeing it on a Broadway national tour in 2015 and seeing a civic theater production last holiday season. So after seeing it twice ( once before this blog was even an idea), and after listening to the soundtrack countless times, looking at the many times this show has been revived as well as made into several film adaptations I  figured I would look at this classic. And for this review besides my two viewings I will be going off of the 2012 Broadway cast recording

Annie follows the likable Annie, an orphan as well as a group of her fellow orphans under the control of the mean Miss Hannigan, when Annie gets taken in by the kind Oliver Warbucks she goes on all sort of adventures, especially in search of her parents. The story is very simple, with very few surprises, but all the characters are likable and there are many jokes and fun moments. This show is a very good show for kids and could be a good introduction to theater, points just mentioned.

The music is very well made, the songs are very catchy and you'll find some of your favorites, the use of jazz fits the NYC setting well, and the jazz changes to fit the characters like fun and light for Annie, but slower for the drab and constantly tired/ Hungover Miss Hannigan. Here are my favorite songs

Maybe

Hard Knock Life

Tomorrow and Tomorrow ( Reprise)

I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here

N.Y.C

Your'e Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile

Something Was Missing

Anything But You

Getting a New Deal for Christmas

So if a tour is coming by, a friend is in a school or theater production, maybe check this classic out, as Classic Musical Month has only one month left, I have  a few more surprises left. Until then I hope your day is a showstopper

5 Classic Songs That Are Encouraging

Sometimes we need a pick me up, a song that encourages us to continue chasing our dreams. Songs that remind you that you can do it if  you don't give up. Feel free to share, as well as why you chose the songs that I have not mentioned. But here are eight classics to brighten up a gloomy day

5. Something's Coming Something Good " West Side Story" : A reminder to keep optimistic, even if we don;t know when, things could turn around, it just may be on it's way

4.I Believe in You " How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" : This song is great because it shows someone encouraging themselves, giving themselves a much need pep talk with a fair amount of convenience but not being prideful.

3. Our Time " Merrily We Roll Along" - the initial inspiration for this list, this song reminds us to keep our friends close and to be optimistic, this song focuses on group efforts and reminds us that dreams are best shared

2. Tomorrow "Annie" : This song reminds us no matter how hard today may be, tomorrow can be better we just need to hold on until then, this song has inspired many generations to keep on, and it is a great song for all ages to remember that things can be better and to have hope.

1. Don't Rain on My Parade " Funny Girl" : This song is an anthem, it shows sun or rain, that we can at least try. No matter what we can try to achieve our dreams, and sometimes all we need to do is have the courage to try. Streisand leads this triumphant song, giving hope and reminding us to not listen to naysayers.

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper.

Shakespeare

April is the month that the bard from Stafford-Upon-Avon both was born and passed way 52 years later. His plays are read and performed hundreds of years after they premiered in the Globe. From comedy to drama, He was always good at making  characters we can all relate to, with flaws whether leading to laughs or tragedy. Yes I said he, I do think he was one man who wrote many works, and some were collaborations, so you will hear no conspiracy from me of Shakespeare used as a pen name. He wrote abut relevant topics such as race, class, and even talked about historical figures from his own time as well as writing excellent poetry. I still have plenty of shows to look into, and I plan to look into one Shakespeare show to celebrate before the month is over. What is your favorite Shakespeare show? I may need to look into it soon, here are the ones  I have seen and or read

Hamlet

Romeo and Juliet

Julius Ceaser

Loves Labors Lost

The Taming of the Shrew

Until next time, I hope your day is a showstopper

Expanding Hoizions

When taking Drama 101 back in college ( a big inspiration for me to start this blog) my professor told us " There is not one way only, it takes on many forms, there are Operas, Plays, Ballets, Musicals, even improv shows and dance recitals are considered theater, they are live productions meant to entertain. " I was reminiscing when this idea came back to me, and it made me want to improve this blog, and that means looking into plays, movie adaptations, ballets, dances, maybe even some opera ON TOP of what I am already doing. meaning I still want to cover musicals most of the time but I also want to add other avenues to spice things up. Starting with....

Judging A Show By It's Cast Album : Merrily We Roll Along

I  have been looking more into Sondheim lately, I was only aware of a few of his shows and I wanted to look into one I have heard of a few times " Merrily We roll Along", and right now from just listening to the cast album and reading the plot... I really want to see this show, and I am more then glad to add to my playlist.

The plot follows Frank, a successful film writer, though he admits his films are shallow and are just made to make money so he can write the projects he wants to. But selling out, among other decisions he has made, leads to a party though the crowds praise him at this gathering of the elite,he ends one of his closets friendships as well as his 2nd marriage. Though he is well off he is very unhappy having pushed away those closest to him... then the transitions begin . This show works entirely in flashbacks , showing how all the characters got to this point . so the relationships go from worse to better. And that is so unique that I need to see this show play out on stage, the show begins where most shows end, working backwards is something I would like to see. the plot has many surprises that unfold as we go backwards. The themes of dreams, goals, and friendship are handled very well and don't feel tacked on but add life to the characters, no one is a real villain but they make mistakes, and the ideas of what it takes to get what you want, and what the costs are.

The music fits every situation and mood well, going from calm and collected to fast paced. The songs can inspire you and are very catchy. It's crazy how the same sounding songs can have two different meanings as well, showing how friendships and dreams change over time. If you are an aspiring writer or artist, some of the songs will inspire you, especially the later ones when it shows our leads getting their start. Here are some of my favorites that immediately went on my playlists and were listened to on repeat:

Merrily We Roll Along

Old Friends ( Part One and Two)

All  Seven Transitions ( 2nd is My Favorite)

Growing Up

It's A Hit

Opening Doors

Our Time

I am so glad i looked into this show, and as said before whether on Broadway or in a civic theater, this is is a show that I want to see as soon as possible, If you have not heard of this show I highly recommend looking into this show, it is another Sondheim classic and I highly recommend it, there are a few filmed and live versions, I plan on looking into them on a later date and doing a follow up post. Until then thanks for reading and I hope your day is a showstopper
